Various small prestigious companies - 7-10

I’ve done leetcode, gone through CTCI and skiena, and yet I can’t solve these retarded problems. Where the fuck am I going wrong? Why can’t I just ducking get an onsite? How do people manipualtw these fucking problems in their head?? Should I give up CS?

I failed 10 interviews before getting the one, in the end the offer I got was actually the best of all of them and the best position. Don’t lose hope, it will happen eventually

I’d love to help people if I wasn’t stupid. But I’ve searched on blind for people in the same situation and not one person who has failed the phone interviews multiple times has made it in to a prestigious company. If no one else has done it there’s no way I can be the first.

I had filled about 900 job applications during masters and was struggling till Feb (3 months before graduation), got an offer from Amazon and rejects from almost everywhere else. Work life balance sucks here but you know what bro - realizing how hard it was to get a job makes me appreciate what I have.

Failure isn’t taken so lightly in all cultures. It reflects not only on the individual but to those associated with.

It's hard to be supportive when you tend to lash out at posters encouraging you to not lose heart. Like even if I cloned you and had him post here telling you not to give up, you would probably still shut him down for "not understanding" 😕

I know it wouldn't necessarily help during a phone interview, but have you tried writing it out and working on it on paper? Seeing if it's easier to see something written out you can focus on one part at a time instead of juggling it all internally.

True, I say that mostly because people I've met that are good at solving these cs problems white board or outline it in someway. Same advice I got from a python professor, and he was practically a robot.

I am picky, but so is everyone else who gets in. It’s not some minuscule group. Basically everyone with a CS degree gets in there. It’s below average programmers who can’t, which is why I’m suicidal.
      Mar 30, 2018
    • New Bvkg00
I’m not sure why you get suicidal for these things. After so many rejects you should have understood these are all just part of life and you have to move on and keep trying. Dont consider a reject as a measure of your skills. Just consider it that you were not a good match for that particular position and in that situation.

It is a measure of my skills. They are literally testing whether you have semblance of intelligence. If I can’t pass the phone screen that means I’m a mediocre programmer who would be just as successful as someone who transitioned to CS from sales.

You seriously need therapy sessions dudet..get your shit together. Just don’t be a coward and give up on something which wouldnt hold any real value to you in 2-5 years down the line and maybe to them as well who you want to work for. I understand shit happens and there are times which are bad or worse but what you put on stake is your decision.
On the side note; I started my hunt in 2016. Phone interviewed for more than 15 companies. I made more miles in 2017 than money because of onsites..Take any name that comes to your mind, I failed it. But that’s okay. Every interview has taught me something. I am still there where I was in 2016..but I don’t shit care of such things. I’m very sure you make way more than me and you are way younger to me. But I don’t give a shit what others make. I just stay focussed on what my long term plan is. Life has better things to give. They are out there. Explore.
Believe me or not; start gyming and yoga. That will help.
And FYI, no one is ugly. Beauty comes in different forms.

Try requesting them to do phone interviews "in person".

In 2012, I failed a *lot* of phone interviews (Google, Facebook, Netflix, Apple, Twitter and Vmware). I used to work at Microsoft at that time but that was my first job out of college. I joined Microsoft in 2004 and back then, interviews were not so crazy as they are now (and moreover, there was no phone screen for me. Microsoft interviewed me on-campus)

Anyway, It always felt like the questions asked in phone interviews were a bit difficult and/or I got unlucky to have an interviewer with a high bar

Around 2014, I reapplied to Google, Facebook, LinkedIn and Uber. This time, I requested all of them to do the initial phone screen "in person. I flew down to bay area one week and set those in-person "phone screens" in a week. I did *much* better.

I failed Facebook but I got through Google, LinkedIn and Uber (and ended up doing well in the actual full interviews and got offers from Google and LinkedIn. Failed Uber)

I don't exactly have a great track record at interviews but doing the phone screens in-person clearly seems to have worked for me.

You are white boarding the problems they give you, right? Not trying to do them in your head? At your onsite interviews you would be solving on the board, writing out your code. You mentioned above that you can't do the problems in your head so I'm just confirming that you are at least doing them on paper while you are on the phone.

Also, as others have said, it might be something else about your phone demeanor that is getting in the way, not a deficiency in your intellect. Do you speak too quickly, too softly, too meekly, do you upspeak, do you interrupt or over talk? Do you think before you reply or do you um-er your way through thinking out loud? Do you listen carefully and ask clarifying questions to make sure you understand what they are asking of you? I agree with blueauthor above, mock phone screens might be good, and record them so you can hear how you're coming across. Good luck!
