I got E6 in Facebook with total tc as 400k. I just want to know if getting E6 lower range pay is better or E5 high range pay is better. Is E6 better as there is more room for growth and better scope of good Rsu refresher? Or Is E6 more risky as I have to prove I’m worth E6
It's a moot question though, right? Not like you can renegotiate your offer down to E5. I mean, you could try, but I think it would make folks really scratch their heads and possibly consider whether you're going to be a good hire after all.

I won't lie, it's a high bar to come in as E6. You will get one or two halves to ramp up but will then be held to a higher bar than most engineers at the company. It can be hard to perform at that level without having a network through the company. A lot of people in that position end up moving on. But clearly, some people manage it and succeed. If I were in your position, I'd negotiate aggressively on comp. It's not like you'll be held to a lower standard than any other E6, so you should be compensated accordingly. And that way, if you do walk away, at least it will have been worth your while.

400k is probably higher than any e5 offer you could get. There may be e5s that make that or more after getting refreshers and raises, but offers can be different.

If you are dumb enough to want to take a lower level and assume higher pay at it, you probably shouldn’t even be getting an offer at E6!
