TC Facebook: 118k base, 50k signing, 150k stock/4 years. Menlo Park. TC Microsoft: 118k base, 75k signing over 2 years, 130k stock/3.5 years (returning intern). Redmond. Reason to go to Facebook: - $$$ Best refreshers in the industry. - I'm a very fast dev and learner. The bigger the pressure, the better I perform. I feel like Facebook tends to reward these traits heavily. - Faster growth Reason to go to Microsoft: - I'm a bit burn out and I want to take 1 year to work on myself, get in better shape, etc. - 50% of the stock will be vested by 1.5 year. I can always interview elsewhere and try to get an even better TC bump then - I hate Menlo Park and prefer Seattle. TC: 0 new grad
If you feel burnt out right now, the feeling will only get worse.
One thing to note is that fb for the last couple of years is hiring only 5+ soft engineers externally. So if you dont join fb you probably are going to have to wait 5 more years. This may be a bit differnt for you since you are an intern but just something you should consider
Thanks! I'll probably aim for a company with good wlb when I'll be applying for L4 tbh Linkedin, Airbnb, Google, Lyft, Stripe
Also FB is a slowly failing company with a declining future long term. Avoid.
Did you recently fail their interview? The same can be said about Amazon with all competition from Walmart, Target and Microsoft.
LOL we have more money than we know what to do with... FB is still growing like crazy, sounds like somebody has an inferiority complex...
TBH you can’t go wrong with either, but like someone said, it will be considerably difficult to join FB again later on, so take that into account. If you’re burnt out, most would agree that you should go to Microsoft, but tbh the tales about FB WLB don’t really apply to you if you really are a really good engineer like you say. WLB is heavier at FB because the marginal returns of working harder are unparalleled, while at other companies it’s not worth it, because the engineering style is not bottom-up. If you’re focused on TC/growth, FB is def the way to go, but don’t discount your mental health; it’s far more important than money and prestige, and should be heavily weighted in your utility function. Microsoft would definitely be better in that respect, especially if you’re a naturally competitive person who would be inclined to be a top performer at FB and subsequently have less WLB. Once again, you can’t go wrong, but given your circumstances I would honestly go with Microsoft, and try to join FB/G/top startup when you’re ready to kill it. You already seem to have a top of band MS offer.
Makes sense. Thanks for the insights!
Come to Microsoft when you are done with career growth. FB has more opportunities and career growth for you
Don't be fooled. Microsoft (as well as Amazon) stock refreshers suck big time. Unless you're senior or above, refreshers even for top performers are so embarrassing that you don't even want to discuss with friends who work at FB/G. Beware!
Thanks! I won't be staying long enough to be impacted by refreshers
Congrats on both the offers!! I also got an offer from FB today! Which level are you going to be joining at?
Thanks! E3/Level 60
I thought level 59 was entry?
If you got both fb and ms then you must be decent at interviewing. Assuming you are, I’d go with fb for a year or two to optimize for learning then go to google (or apple :D) when you start feeling burnt out. Like someone said, please do not brush aside your mental health, and try your best to find time outside of work to spend with friends and family and doing things you like
Just curious which school you graduated from?
Top 10 cs. We have a good deadline extension policy.
Cmu?
