Been at the same place for ~8 yrs - and have been thinking about quitting for the past 2. I get increasingly ill just being here. Constantly is a crabby/bad mood. Been actively looking for jobs but when I get busy (often....) my search comes to screeching halt. I’m paid well enough and generally enjoy my colleagues but I’m utterly sick of the work, hate most of my clients, and have no more patience working for nasty partners. I would love to quit with nothing lined up and take a short sabbatical (I have plenty of cash - not worried about $$) but I am worried about how future employers will perceive it. Looking for any and all input. Thanks!
Get a job and join a couple of months later
Take time off to interview prep + interview. Then quit and join a few months later.
I did this and am having a very productive sabbatical! Highly recommend it to recharge the batteries before taking on the next challenge.
Yeah hit the brakes if you have no visa and such issues! We need to be gentle with ourselves and be okay to allow us to disconnect. You never know what lies at the other end, and im sure it will be much better. Im sure as long as you market yourself well and the employers like you for your past exp , they wont even care for your couple months off. And if its the kind of employer that does then they probably are a red flag anywya
It might be too late. unless you're in a faang company I wouldn't even interview you. not even phone screen. my boss and recruiter both agree. It's not personal, it's just 8 years of stagnation/paid unemployment.
Really? I m just curious. If a person has more exp at a place they view it not necessarily as a merit?
Not in bay area
I took a sabbatical at A big4 firm. Know of others that did that too. Doesn’t change your employment status but gives you the break (and some cash while you’re off). Took the time to relax and find a new gig.
So...TC or GTFO
No one cares about short sabbaticals. It’s pretty common.
Say you've worked hard for 8 years and wanted to take a break to reconnect with family. If they see that as a negative, you don't wanna work for them.
Are you worried future employers will see your long tenure as bad? A lot of places see that as good as long as you have progressed at your company or are competent. Sounds like you are already sure you want a new job, so go for it!
