I have 11+ YOE in backend java development. Iām on H1B ( with 9 years in the US ... in NYC precisely ). My base is $160k ( no RSU or bonus ) . I work 50-60 hours a week mostly ( no overtime pay of course ) All the high TC posts here make me feel like shit .... yes Iām in a contracting position now but I had FTE positions before this. When I was looking out earlier this year none of offers ( FTE or contrat ) where willing to pay anywhere close to 175k š
Nyc comp is in that range unless you work for FAANG or hedge fund or Bloomberg. Banks, insurance, fashion, consulting etc pay crap compared to Bay Area or Seattle.
Dude, whatās wrong with you. If you canāt help atleast have some empathy. High TC doesnāt mean youāve to be rude
What a asshole
H1B restricts you in many ways and your options are limited to employers who will sponsor you. If you're looking for stability, there is sacrifice to be made of 15 to 20k. Don't feel bad when people post about TC.
Yeah but itās been more than 10 years and God knows how many more years I have to wait before I get my green cardā¦ Until then I will just keep on making peanuts for the same amount of expertise and hardwork for which citizens are getting quarter and half a million every year
It is very unfortunate situation. I call it modern day slavery. I wish, lawmakers will put some law around this highly skilled labor abuse. Everyone knows it but no one has done anything to address the problem.
Honestly OP is lucky to get that much. Many H1Bs are hired explicitly with the plan to underpay and overwork because options are limited.
Dude Iāve prepped n interviewed like crazy every 2-3 years ... The only piece of luck I had was in the first H1 lottery same as anyone else on H1B ā¦ After that everything with my hard work š I was even laid off during 2008 and 2010 recession.... so donāt degrade someoneās efforts w/o knowing anything .... all H1Bs have the same avenues as I have if not more ... if you were talking about L1 visa holders I could still understand cause they canāt switch jobs ...
I think youāve misunderstood. Iām saying the system is rigged against you. Many companies use H1B as indentured servitude. Your compensation is pretty high compared to a lot of H1Bs I know. I made no comments regarding you personally.
Will you work less and get paid more in India?
speaking from my experience of going back there and living for 10 months .... I didnāt like it and regretting it ... wanted to come back here asap ( which I did )
You can switch companies under H1B. Have you tried applying to any big tech companies?
You wouldnāt make 160k in your wildest dream back home. Stop whining and start appreciating what you have. I understand moving around is harder with H1B, but itās not impossible. Want higher TC? Leetcode for 3-6 months, youāll double your TC in no time.
Umm ... Cost of living being the main reason .... and many Software engineers there are now making 40-50 lacs easily .... which is way more that 160k USD here
I donāt doubt some SWEs make way more than here. Perhaps you should join them over there, quadruple your TC and live happily ever after. Youād be stupid to stay here if you can make so much more over there.
I wonder if H1Bs at FAANG also get RSUs or just base? The base looks really low based on https://h1bdata.info/index.php?em=Linkedin+Corporation&job=&city=CALIFORNIA&year=2019 for example... yikes!
The thing that I found as a dev was 50-60 was norm. Plus another 10-15 a week keeping up with whatās next. I also got burned out and moved on to project management. Is it less stressful? In some ways yes itās better, but mostly still feel like an indentured servant working for the man for his hopes and dreams, sucking whatever life I have left.
