Feeling depressed Tier 1 interviews dropping like flies...

Im targeting SWE2 level.

I need some therapy. I've been very successful in getting Tier 2 offers at the Senior level (>75% success rate), 5 offers and counting but their TC is shit (less than $150k).

I hate my fucking job and I'm going to go mental if I don't get something by Nov. I really don't give a fuck at work anymore, I just don't show up and 'work from home'.

And now my Tier 1s are dropping like flies. Google, Lyft, Apple think I'm subhuman (rejects). Even NVIDIA gave me the finger this week. Amazon is dragging their feet despite referrals to 3 teams. Uber and MSFT still in phone screens. I can get referral to Facebook and Airbnb but will not be able to pass with just one month left.

Worse of all I need to move to Seattle and I'm not even getting past the resume screens of the Tier 2s. All my offers is somewhere else but Seattle. Fuck!!! Fuck!!!!!

The problem is you’re not in Mensa.

Lol people actually pay for Mensa membership?

It’s my understanding that FAANG recruiters filter out anyone that doesn’t have “Mensa member” on their LinkedIn profile. Plus your Mensa membership gets you up to 15% off at Choice hotels. So definitely not a joke.

I look forward to meeting you at the next monthly meeting Kyle. I’ll be the one wearing the “I’m silently correcting your grammar” T shirt.

Take that 'tier 2' job. You'll be happy and most probably will enjoy being at the top. Better to be at a place where you're valued than one of the crowd. You might get a different perspective, and maybe the market might change too. Stop wasting your youth in cramming and interviewing.

TC matters. Attitude also matters. You have a really shitty perspective on life and work and if interviewers catch a tiny whiff of that, they’ll go running.

"shit work at FAANG" - when FAANG stocks dry up - and stocks always do - you'd better have skills for the good jobs... Even when you get into FAANG, your TC will normalize over time if you aren't at the top.

This may be Blind, but if even a hint of 'Blind' attitude shows in your interviews or at work, it'll impact your future growth and prospects.

I never talk TC until offer, and all work is interesting work. I know how to play the game. I just needed a safe space to vent.

I'm damn confident if, no when, I get into FAANG I can make it to the top. I just need to get in. I have never been in a situation in my career where I can't cope. I've had to make major career course corrections 2 times in the past, starting from the bottom and eventually I'm always outperforming at my level. And all my frustrations with working at non-FAANG companies is the poor TC and slow promotion.

I guess want a place where I can do awesome shit and be paid for it.

Everyone wants that, but every company eventually slows down, including on TC and promotion. It will happen to FAANG too. FB is the newest and it is almost 15 years old now. Look at any up and coming startup, and hope the market for IPO stays healthy.

Given your attitude you’ll probably be unhappy at a “tier 1” company. Seriously. Keep working hard, try to get more involved at your job and please, please, please go see a therapist. It’s good for “healthy” people to see a therapist regularly and it sounds like you have some emotional labor to do, so please do that.

I don't agree. All I know is that my life loss function is to maximize TC and be good at what I do.

I can tell you it's so frustrating being good/recognized when all you get is praise, lip service and 'recognition' but no TC. Do you know how good FAANG is?

No offense Apple, but SWE2 pays $200k or more at FAANG. I will need to promote from mid level to max level just to achieve that TC growth.

Thank you, yes I am aware of how much money we make.

You’re assuming that I’ve never been in your position and that money is everything. You don’t know my fucking resume or what I did before. You think I was born working at apple? Pretty recently I was making $100k total comp. Your problems won’t go away as soon as you get the job you think you deserve. But if you’re just going to argue with everyone here trying to help you... good luck.

“Life loss function is to maximize TC” Jesus Christ, no wonder you’re miserable. Seriously, don’t give up on your goals and keep working but 1) clearly something isn’t working out and you may need a different approach and 2) your TC and current company shouldn’t determine your satisfaction or happiness in life.

Are you learning something from each interview rejection?

If yes, it's not a complete waste. Keep iterating and tweaking your prep.
    Good luck!

Just because company x rejected you doesn't mean another company will reject you too.

My friend for rejected at Amazon and she got accepted at Google 🙂

I am learning a lot of things, but I feel that it's a continuously moving target that always remain out of reach. Each interview tells me where I need to improve, I do that. But the next interview pops out something else entirely different.

That's expected for candidates with many gaps. We can't find them for you all at once. Some gaps hide other gaps.

    Wow, hold on!

Being turned down for a job doesn't at all mean you are subhuman.

Chin up, keep trying, don't take it personally. Most people I know at Google took several rounds of interviews to get through.

No he’s right. Nothing more subhuman than getting rejected from FAANG.

Oh poor you, you make meager $150k “not giving a fuck” about work as SWE2. Life must be hard. You sound like an awesome catch. Sure, the problem must be with these “Tier-1” companies. Fuck them!

Don't listen to hater fucks here. I kinda feel ya. My advice: sit back and realize what can you improve faster and is significant. Then try again. If it doesn't work, then hey you are the top dog so be it.

Don't worry something will come along.. I feel like this everyday.. There can be no company worse Than mine.. I can't even work from home.. On some days.. I reevaluate my whole life.. I even set a count down on my phone to tell myself I'll get the fuck out of this country.. But somehow I keep adding time and then companies ask random questions in the interviews.. Which makes me so mad since I know they don't even use those things in day to day life.. If you are not on a h1b or other visa.. I suggest try taking some time off.. Enjoy some of that time.. And rest of the time. Don't worry.. Something will come along! All the best
