I am a software developer working at a state department with very old technologies for five years, I am an average developer just like my colleagues. In my place most people think DevOps is a software which you need to install in your machine. I have a dream to work for big companies like Google, Amazon or Microsoft at one point of time. Early this year a recruiter from Amazon contacted me over LinkedIn for a job opportunity, I started learning more about data structures, practiced Leetcode for 2 months and was able to clear the online test and phone interview. They called me for an onsite interview but I was so scared that I cancelled it as these big companies have the smartest people working for them and I will be fired on day one even if I somehow managed to clear the onsite interview.Lat week again another recruiter contacted me for a job opportunity for Amazon. I am not sure what to do, I am working hard everyday practicing in Leetcode and reading about system designs, however if I am asked about any of Amazon's LP , I will have no answer as I have never encountered any of those scenarios at work. Felling demotivated and depressed. Any suggestion will help me immensely.
Wtf why would you cancel? I thought the same as you. Even if you’re not “smart enough”, you don’t lose anything from trying. It’s all about preparing and having some confidence.
dude just go and worst case you fail, u will learn from it. I got into MS in first try, but in second try for Amazon, and I failed Google 3 times.
Scheduled Google to practice for Amazon - failed Amazon, got Google :) You never know how it will go - just keep trying and hope to get lucky with the questions!
Lol if you think people answer behavioral questions from work experience. It's anywhere from very fictionalized version of something resembling an incident at work, to totally rehearsed answers to expected questions. Another option is to look for companies just a bit below FANG --Oracle, MSFT, etc. It would be somewhere in between your current job and FANG, but closer to FANG. Also you'll probably survive at least for a year, so even if you get fired you can always look for another job.
LP = BS.
How's working for the government? Do you get a pension, and what technologies do you work on?
The work is really slow, no tight deadlines, I manage to do everything I am asked working 3 hours daily, rest of the time I watch you tube videos on algorithms and practice leetcode or read something from GeeksForGeeks. There is a pension and benefits are good but I am feeling worthless recently. I work mostly in Java and a little Powershell. Most of our applications have used in Struts framework and few in Spring
Working 3 hours a day feels like a dream job! How's the pay?
I'd love to work with someone who is excited to work. Get that onsite buddy and nail it! You don't need work experience for LP questions. Be brutally honest and use experiences from your real life if they don't exist at work. Don't undersell yourself. Just from your post I can tell you've shown "bias for action" (prepping on leetcode + sys design), "learn and be curious" (data structures + algos), "deliver results" (cleared phone screen).
Thank you, I will give it a go again

how do we feel about the future of work/tech?
It sounds like you are insecure and have low self-esteem. The people that work at Amazon are just as dumb as everyone else, that's a FACT, they are just paid better and don't doubt themselves. Study like you are doing. If you don't get the job, keep looking. I assume you are in the DC metro area, are you up for relocating? If so, skies the limt as far as job openings.
Thanks, also while doing leetcode I had to look at the solutions for Hard problems and am not able to come with a solution of my own, will practicing more help me with that?
Dude almost everyone looks at solutions for LC hards. If you’re able to do mediums quick that’s probably going to be good enough to get into somewhere good.
