Fired after two months for “fit”

This is post-GE, but I had joined a California-based startup and after only 2 months, fired for “fit” issues. There was no prior cause, other teams worked well with me, but my boss said it was my communication style to him. He didn’t voice this until now. I was fired without HR present or without HR giving me notice regarding this “fit” issue in the last 2 months.

Now California is an “at-will” state, meaning no cause is needed to let anyone go. But given this situation, what options, if any, do I have to negotiate benefits (not COBRA) as part of severance? I have an infant and am worried about not having health insurance while I look for another job. They use TriNet for benefits management and are a reasonably sized company (100+ people).

Startup is obviously running out of 💰and the manager was told to cut. He fired the least experienced guy - 2 months.

You might be eligible for unemployment benefits from the state.

Which company? That's a shitty thing to do. They deserve a recruitment problem.

FWIW, HR does not need to be present at a firing.

They don’t have to document a “fit” issue.

Feel free to confirm all this with an employment attorney

Sorry to hear that. Dm me for referrals in the Bay Area. Also, do us all a favor by naming the company so that we don’t apply there ever!
