If you have to ask, you are hopefully on it.

Microsoft vastly prefers people quit versus being fired. So they will first give you a connect with the not meeting expectations checkmark. That is the biggest sign that they are considering firing.

Once that box is checked, how long would you say it is until someone is let go? Ex. Checked in late June, cut loose in Sept?

There is no standard timeline. Sometimes people do not even get fired if their performance starts meeting expectations. If someone is consistently not meeting expectations, and there is no indication that will change, then firing can happen in weeks.

Does PIP still happen? Had a coworker who was verbally told they weren’t wanted on the team. Manager may have just been being nice, warning them of what was to come. Not sure if they got a not meeting expectations or not.

I think it depends - with some people you might have a gut feeling and just know they can't perform at the capacity you're expecting, or they just don't "get it". Or they work horribly with the team in general

For example we've had devs that we pushed out because they regularly didn't understand what they were working on at any scope, asked the same questions repeatedly - others would be put on their problems (various levels in various situations, sometimes people newer than the problem dev) and have no issue. That's kinda when you know.

If people are just lazy, or are doing specific things poorly they might go on pip because it's more actionable

There is no pip at Microsoft. Every case is individually handled.

    Yeah, right.
Did you get the mail from Satya today regarding employee retention? If not, you're likely not going to be here much longer.

    This is my bio.
Depends on role and priorities. If you're working on a major release and own a significant milestone it'll likely happen after the completion. If you're hindering the completion of the milestone then it could happen at any time. If you're in the field many cuts happen at the very end or beginning of the FY.
