Is it worth asking 110k on the original offer of 80k ? Company A offer - 110k Company B offer - 80k I like the company B better, but not enough to take 30k pay cut. Is it worth negotiating with company B for 110k or will I be laughed out for demanding 40 % more than the original offer ? I may settle for 105k for company B. Medium COL area ( for e.g. 1 bedroom apt for 1100 $) Also what would the polite way to ask for such a big jump ? Edit : typo
It depends. I’d pass on you the moment you asked 110k. In fact there wouldn’t even be a possibility to go back to 80k. It would be over, but that’s because I don’t low ball
Really? You’d pass on someone with a valid higher offer asking for more? The market has deemed their worth regardless of what u think is high balling or not lmao
I would. I’m not going to hire a guy I can’t afford. I always know from a recruiter the number that would be accepted by the candidate and will never offer lower than that.
Yes tell them your competing offer but say you like them better and really would want to work for them over the other offer if possible
Def read https://haseebq.com/my-ten-rules-for-negotiating-a-job-offer/
Definitely tell them about the offer and tell B that you like them better and was hoping they can beat it. Depending on the place B might require the offer letter (google tends to ask this a lot). Then they’ll give as high as their level (and their desire to win you) could give. I got a really good offer and then downleveled elsewhere. My offer was a LOT higher their their level band but they certainly never laughed at me. They’re humans and can understand. Recruiter was definitely bummed because there’s only so much they could do but they’re going to try and get you the best possible offer they can do so you’d pick B over A.
Some companies will pay as little as they possibly can. Lowballing is what they do best. The company paying 30k more is obviously more generous and wanted you to be more motivated and happy working for them.
I will just go to company A for 110K. The higher offer tells me two things - Company A compensates better and will continue to beat its competitors, and Company A will prob have better talents in general (you can grow faster)
If the job is in the Bay Area, fresh grad asking for 160TC will be taken seriously.
Not in bay area. Medium COL, updated the post.
100% use the other offer but caveat it with your preference for their company because of x,y,z but you want them to get closer to market. What are their other benefits? Culture is worth something... They might not be able to match base but perhaps get closer, negotiate a better vacation package for you, faster 401k vesting schedule, bonus opportunity based on goals, performance, profitability, any equity chance, etc.
You shouldn’t like a company that can’t even pay you six figures. Whatever they have told you, it’s a lie. It was just a sales pitch. It’s a poor shit hole. Abandon.
Don't think you'd be laughed at if you have a concrete offer with higher number. I've negotiated using a possible offer that wasn't even in hand at the time. I'd definitely try to negotiate, do some research on upper limits of the role you're offered, and aim for that. They might not be able to match but you can definitely close the gap at a minimum
