Dude made violent threats, brought ammo to school, and assaulted people; that's more than enough to give him a criminal record and fail the background check. So there you go, enforcing existing laws more vigilantly would have prevented him from buying an AR-15 and gotten him help. Let's focus on getting that right. Show's over. Everyone can go home.
What about the cases when the person freaks out for the first time and decides to go on a rampage. There is a first time for everyrhing and these things cannot be detected instantaneously. Surprised you dint seem to care about the initialization scenario for your argument. How did you clear the interviews?
How often does that happen? Gun crime is at historical lows and rampage shootings are a near negligible fraction of that. 538 did an excellent treatment on the actual numbers which I strongly recommend.
How often does it have to happen for you to want to take action? Remember the Vegas shooting? Anyone can snap. The power to kill has, is and will always be abused.
It seems like many failures led up to this. Quite sad how many people, agencies, etc failed. Local school people, local community officials, school resource officer, local PD, FBI, school district. I mean good lord.
I know about the law enforcement, what’s the story on school people’s failure? I heard they had been doing shooter drills. Links?
So you want all of those entities to work tirelessly and flawlessly just so that you can keep practicing your hobby? Such a waste of human effort in maintaining an outdated law.
Right, so let's give up our guns and let the police and FBI protect us from criminals! That worked out great in Florida!
After a lot of reading I’m coming around to the idea of how one could perceive guns as mandatory in rural areas where first responders are very far. But it still doesn’t explain the need for assault rifles. And neither does your comment
How would just enforcing these laws have prevented the Las Vegas shooting? Please explain. Every mass shooting is not one random incident in a vacuum. There’s a common thread here. It’s the AR-15 and similar high speed high caliber weapons. Of course laws should be tightened but nobody is ever able to explain the purpose of civilians having such a powerful weapon.
To play the devils advocate: it’s a way of life. Unfortunately there are a lot of things that are bad and yet not acted upon because of that reason
Mass shootings aren't exclusively done with them. It's just a common model so you hear about them a lot regardless of context. The Virginia Tech shooter had regular pistols and a much higher death count. Think of it like this - a good number of texting and driving cases probably involved an iPhone, but going after the phone model isn't going to reduce the rate of texting and driving.

Yeah no joke. 90% of the time people and the system see these at risk people but ignore them.
