For mediocre FAANG engineers out there, please show me how to get in!

Jul 13 21 Comments

BS from non-target university, I recently got a job as SWE at a tier-2 company.

Although I am grateful to get the job, I would like to know what to do in order to get into FAANG in the next 1 year.

Yes, it is about the brand. I want to build more self-confidence in myself. So I think of it as a personal challenge.

Thanks 🙏

How is your TC broken down?

You are out earning some of the best entry level offers that I've seen unless 90k of that is options.

You aren't a particularly exciting candidate from what you've told us, but your comp is great. At your level at a FANG, you, not everyone at your level, would be making much less.

I get the need for prestige, but you really dont need it. If you want the network, just go throught other networking venues and build up your comp.

But to be clear, you are likely already ready to clear a FANG interview. Just prep as normal and reach out for a referral or to hiring managers directly. But do wait at least 9 months into your current job before reaching out.

All of my FANG interviews weren't nearly as hard as interviews at a "tier-2" companies. Mostly because FANG interviews are gameable, just read CTCI and do the company specific questions on leetcode.

    • 0 yoe is 200K at G (50th percentile) and something like 220K+ is easily doable with a few competing offers.

Isn’t the point that non-mediocre engineers get in?

“mediocre” is not a static state. I might improve to become more non-mediocre.

I’d just like to know what to do and guidance to a correct path.

Thanks! Is there any meetups that FB engineers usually join in the Bay?

That’s great. 190k start is great. Focus on learning and you should be able to crack a FAANG going forward. Keep practicing leetcode. Also, I know many in FAANG even at the big G and Amazon getting paid lower than me. So I am not sure if FAANG should be an end goal. There are many other cool opportunities worth exploring. I too left the Amazon offer on the table, as they couldn’t match any of my other offers.
