Foreign Bosses

Since the re-org at MS a few years ago I’ve noticed a lot more managers from foreign countries here in the US. Are they trained on what rights we as US employees have? Makes me want to openly complain about H1B’s and how they keep tech wages low in front of her to see or have an open discussion about salaries in general (both of which are protected speech). I ask because of a innocent comment for Halloween costume I suggested. It was taken as pro-Trump. It actually had nothing to do with politics.

  • OK So you got caught making offensive remarks and now you want to invoke your "entitlement" and go to malign "H1Bs" because you are an ass***le. Yeah right.

Not at all, the comment wasn’t deemed to be offensive except to the manager who arrived late to a meeting and jumped in 1/2 cocked. The exercise of protected speech doesn’t make me an asshole because I exercise it. I’m just applying the situation to true “protected speech” in the workplace to see how that would be approached by a foreign manager that doesn’t understand how much we Americans love our freedoms.

freedom is never free. Become a manager!

    • Take my advice and move to mid-west and join a shitty small company. You will be able to openly voice misogynistic, racist, homophobic, anti-immigration, nativist, gun-nutty comments all day under "protected speech" and freedom. Lots of people like you here. You will be at home :)

But in a civilized place like Microsoft you will get your bigoted and entitled ass kicked out of the door pretty fast.

To clarify, u have the right to free speech, always, but there can be consequences that the constitution won’t protect u from like losing a job

Just trying to understand what you said, you felt insulted when they took it as pro-trump?
You are talking about your free speech at the same time don't like others free speech because they are immigrant, and painting the whole immigrant managers in 1 color because of your 1 experience, brilliant!

  • How do you know what they have H1bs? They could be citizens or green card holders.
Indian mafia is real at MSFT but true in any tech company. I had great Indian managers and terrible ones and don’t care where they are from

    • Don’t think they are trained in those aspects. If you don’t like her exercise your God given right to walk away or change teams. In Washington state, you don’t have rights to shit.

Sounds like you think H1B is lowering your compensation. This may be true at some third-tier companies, but it is not necessarily true at MSFT. Without global talents, the competitiveness of Microsoft would be diminished and we may even shed more jobs as a result. FB and Google hire plenty of H1Bs and they pay the best among large cap tech co.

Talents are globally distributed. Opportunities are not.

How is that your managers problem? If you have a complaint about the salary, take it up with the CEO. Barking at the little guy who has no say gives you nothing and serves only to demean the managers, so don’t pretend you’re not into a little bit of cross burning and a little bit for sieg heil-ing.

When you clowns going to learn that name calling gets you l nowhere. We can have differing views but the name calling is beyond juvenile.

Only describing your true intentions. You’re not here for a discussion. You’re here to start a shitshow or attempt to create an echo chamber to validate your views.

So you are trying to trick your manager into breaking the law and then accuse him, only based on your feeling that since he/she was born in another country and therefore won't be very knowledgeable of the local law.
You sound like an awesome person

Also btw immigrants are not entitled to first amendment, the constitution doesn’t say that anywhere. So far supreme court has supported it for legal immigrats

What does this have to do with the first amendment?

Also please keep in mind, there can be some misunderstanding with people who speak/conduct business in a second language. Maybe give him/her the benefit of doubt and clarify things a little ?

I agree with this advice, but when hearing it directly after my connect was over was a bit bothersome. I had a great year as usual but am honestly concerned when something innocent is assumed to be political especially if It were to real political speech that would fall under “protected” speech such as the H1B issue or working conditions / salaries. I don’t think exercising my rights makes me a snowflake and I understand in general political speech isn’t protected in private sector, but a foreign boss not immersed in our culture could create a problem that shouldn’t exist.

Take advantage of it, they probably think you have a lot more rights than you actually do in the US. Workers get really screwed in this country
