I was thinking about checking out other jobs with better pay, but the additions of free snacks, lunch, and an espresso bar have made me rethink. What are these perks worth? Outside of Google and Facebook (and now Oath), are these perks widely available in NYC?

I think it speaks more to the company's culture when they incentivize your time in more ways than just money.

Eating in NYC is about $3k a year. You could bring your lunch from home, but you're still paying for that food.

    Free food *is* money.

Yes they are. Standard for most NYC companies in the tech/startup space. They're nice, but I'd take money in my pocket.

I used to have free catered food, unlimited drinks/snacks, etc. at a previous company. It seemed great at first, but eventually it becomes whatever. I don't have any of that anymore, and I'm fine with that. I think some people overvalue that perk.

Luckily we have more healthy options than unhealthy ones. I find myself eating a larger quantity than I normally would, but healthier (fruits/veggies, salads) because it's free

I thought the food was fine and I actually got "healthier" (started working out around that time). But some of my coworkers complained the food was too unhealthy. Guess you can't satisfy everyone...

sorry, I think it's a pretty big deal. For me it's not just getting fed for free, it's the brain power I don't have to use up when thinking about what I want to eat for lunch. Also, it's a big part of culture when 85% of the local office drops what they are doing to grab lunch and socialize.
