I just recieved an offer from Google with a weird stock distribution that iv never heard of before. Location: Sunnyvale YOE: 4 Base: 153k Bonus: 15% Stock: 292k / 4 Yrs Stock split by year: 36%/28%/20%/16% Yr 1 total = 281k Yr 2 total = 258k Yr 3 total = 234k Yr 4 total = 223k Have you seen this stuff before? Is it good or bad? Do you think I'll be able to pull more stock by year 3 or will I start to suffer lol Edit: Do you think I can negotiate this offer with no offers from other companies? The fact that the first year is so high kind of goes against me asking for a sign on bonus
They didn’t have this while I was there afaik, but this is great. It reduces the cliff after 4 years. They probably expect the gap to be made up by refreshers plus stock growth in years after year 1, so you’re probably not looking at a drop.
Awesome. Can you give me any insight to refreshers at Google? What kind of timeframe does it occur in and how much is it usually?
Every year. Although I understand that you now only get it in years where you were employed on Jan 1, or something like that. Amounts vary. Depends on your level and performance. The top L4 used to be able to get close to 150k, but I’ve been out of the loop for a while
Still ask for a sign on. L3 up to 50k, L4 up to 75k
I feel weird asking for it with that big first year but fuck it I'll try
Let us know the outcome, Rusty.
They're doing this more and more to compete against higher offers from competitors. It's an interesting strategy as it is akin to a sign-on.
They won't negotiate without a counter-offer. Interesting, I hadn't seen this before. You won't get a drop-off, you'll get a ~70-90k refresher (vests over 4 years) every year after your first year. That's a solid base. I was at 155 after 4 years at L4.
Yeah I'm on the fence about asking for a sign on bonus. They probably won't consider it. I was surprised by the base too, was expecting something <130. Glad I didn't voice my expectations lol
You should totally ask. I guarantee they won't say "whoa, that guy wants more money - screw him". Recruiter will try to get it if you need it to accept. Your offer isn't exceptional and can go higher.
They won't consider without a competing offer, But L4 can get 260k 4 year average
Do they ask proof for counter offer ?
If the competing offer is too good, they ask proof
Problem that now you missed window for automatic refresher in 2021, so your first will be in January 2022 without discretionary refresher from your manager, discuss this with your recruiter. Btw I had same schedule and wasn't able to negotiate much (only +20k per year) :( but that's me being stupid. Got other offers and don't rush to accept.
Thanks for telling me about the refresher schedule! I will definately bring that up with my recruiter. Also I havnt tried for other offers since I havnt even started the process with any other companies and google has already given me an offer. I definately don't have time to find a competing offer right??
Your HC result is valid for a year. Anything else is bullying from recruiter. You have plenty of time. Try to find referrals to FB and apple.
This is to your advantage. It's better for the stock to be front loaded, versus even over the 4 years or backloaded (like what Amazon does).
That's an interesting vesting schedule.
Update: got the peak vest price ... ☹️
Is this for L4 ?
Yes
Congrats !!
