I am a recent grad. i have experience in both software development( java) and little exp in devops( python, ansible). I am more inclined towards devops. is there good future for devops? what are the pros n cons compared to software dev.
I am an SDET, role is pretty close to devops. my advice - grow into development, you'll have much more flexibility.
+1
Software dev is probably an easier path in terms of work/life balance since you'll typically avoid on-call duties. On the other hand, there is a great scarcity in quality DevOps folks who truly have an operational (sysadmin) mindset. Neither one of these career paths is going away. I've been at this for 20+ years and while software development titles have remained fairly consistent over time, what is now called DevOps has existed with different titles over that same period.
There's over 60 DevOps Engineer jobs in Raleigh that no one can fill paying in the 100's (that's high for the southeast) and no one can fill the roles. My advice do DevOps and practice good software engineering skills in your day to day and write apps for fun in your spare time or something. plenty of software skills needed in DevOps more and more and DevOps is the hotness right now.
Doest DevOps sucks .. I an just saying coz QA Devops are pretty much merry go around roles ..
I would say it depends on what type of stress you cope with better. Which is more terrifying: the site being down and the CEO standing next to you texting a VC about the recovery status? Or having four weeks to do a six week project that has a huge ad buy already scheduled and paid for? That is in my view the difference between the two. Constant high levels of stress or waves of stress some of them really extreme. If you join a series A company you'll probably be on a team of five and you can figure out what tasks you are better at.
Pure development is disappearing these days... Most cloud services in big companies here in Seattle run as devops (Amazon, Microsoft for sure, probably Facebook and Uber too; not sure about Google.) Pretty nasty trend. As a rule, the bigger is your pay, the less code you write, which sucks. π

Probably lots of future in devops as the need to automate running actual apps is not going away
