I've learned that both G and FB want give me offer. Passed hiring committee stage at both. Talked to multiple teams and G and narrowed down to 2. Fb is e5 and G is L4. Both recruiters are being kinda cagey and waiting to hear numbers from the other. I told the G recruiter that L4 will be tough to accept because it will likely be below my current comp. Fb recruiter knows I have L4 at G but I haven't told her any numbers. What's the best way to proceed? Just wait it out until they give a number? Tc 340k 7 yoe.
Numbers you don’t have aren’t numbers. Don’t get too far ahead of yourself trying to play them against each other, you could end up with nothing.
I'm not doing that. Both sides aren't offering any number yet. They are waiting for each other.
You shouldn’t have told them before getting numbers. You probably told them that you will get an offer from both which is why they are waiting. Always better to get numbers before anything else, and then negotiate on that.
Tell your current tc and yoe please
Updated op
You could always give them both a number that you would be satisfied with as a starting point.
+1. It's not binding yet it'll break the deadlock.
Google is waiting because they know they can’t/won’t beat most FB offers, and they probably don’t want to go through the hassle if theirs will be blown out of the water. FB is waiting because they know your BATNA will be low if Google goes first. Just give them a number of your own first, rather than waiting for them to break their standoff. Start with FB. Anchor it high.
Based on current stock price if I stay my comp for next 12 months will be 340k. Ask for 400?
I’d start at 425 and let them bring you down to 410. Don’t tell them your current comp. Just say, “To be competitive with my current compensation, I’m targeting 425k total comp.”
G will probably not do >340k at L4. So the problem simplifies. You really are trying to squeeze as much as possible out of FB. What Id do is tell FB that if they give you a 350-400k TC offer you will sign it and not wait for google.
You are not getting 400k for e5. That’s e6 territory
Stay out of my territory
G is unlikely to match your TC in Seattle. Facebook will beat it by probably 10%. Probably not worth the move if you’re doing well at Microsoft. If you’re L65 then moving to FB E5 will be a step back.
340k in MSFT and only get a L4 offer from Google? What has happened? Since when Google can't match MSFT offer. You clearly is at most 64.
My sense is that between FB and Google, they’re very in-tune with each other offer ranges, especially for common roles. They must get and keep these data points all the time.

Tell both companies that they have until close of business on Monday to give you their best offer. Then on Tuesday morning say no to both.
Wait what? Will they bid on you even when you say no?
The first offer is almost never the best. They will give you an offer and will have some wiggle room. Basically, never ever accept the first offer, period.
