For those who have no clue about GM cruise, it’s a self driving company, which recently got 2.25 billion investment from softbank early this June, valued at 11.5 billion.

I have been in the company for about 4 months, I can see the company’s efforts in building a company just like other unicorns, in terms of comp and benefits etc.

Folks what you guys think about GM cruise? (I expected people don’t know it at all due to no product yet.

Cruise folks plz don’t bias the poll. Comment if you want plz..

Cruise is my dream company damn. Or at least it was before y’all went back to equity instead of cash RSU values.

I totally understand importance of liquidity. But if you think GM stock won’t change much and Cruise’s comp structure is already cash heavy, you may want to keep some paper money (15% of you total comp) just hoping it may soar one day.

I don’t like Cruise because their cars are a menace on the road.

Model X I was in tried to ram us into a car stopped at a red light, and veering off lane in the same night. Without me screaming at the driver to take over manually, both would've caused accidents.

I’m not arguing Tesla’s AP is good (because it’s not). My point is that Cruise’s is shitty, and using SF as their alpha testground is a menace.

OP was asking if my issues with Cruise were with autonomous (or autonom’ish if you want to be pedantic) cars, or with Cruise specifically. And they are with Cruise specifically.

Cruise tests in SF, coz it wants to conquer the city settings for self driving cars where ride sharing is more popular and make focus different from waymo. But it has risks that it may delay its release of products or may even not be able to ever. It’s a strategic move. I kinda like waymo’s approach, but cruise’s may turn out good possibly.

Well I’d really appreciate it if they would stop trying to run me over, randomly stopping in the middle of intersections, or thinking a bus at a bus stop is a stopped car in the travel lane.

I don't like Cruise and Lyft as they don't have generous stock refresher policy. Stock refreshers make up for a big % of your total comp.

Did Cruise start giving out stock refresher?? Cruise employees pls confirm

Agree refresher is good. Cruise has refresher now but it’s kinda vague in details to me

Uber and Lyft respond to people's emails and contact attempts much faster than Cruise.

One of my friends was an early employee of Cruise, and he is now worth millions. So yeah, they did well. Not sure what it's like if you join at this point, but I would take them over Uber and Lyft. They are focusing on a very specific market: software for autonomous vehicles. And since they are a wholly owned subsidiary of GM (Marry Barra has been an amazing CEO), they have access to the institutional support of a major auto company and its market reach and customer base. Uber and Lyft (especially the former) are trying to do too much and burning through cash to capture market share of an industry that has low barriers to entry.

They're not wholly owned by GM anymore. SoftBank bought 19%.

I think Uber did what they should do. The other business is to keep up its growth as its scale of ride-sharing already in cities that it can expand(growth will mostly comes from penetration)

Many here don't know that Uber's failure in AV space is one of the reasons behind Cruise receiving $2+B funding from SoftBank. And that's the reason, Cruise is no longer 100% GM company.

How easy is it to get IC4 offer? I heard from HR that IC5 and above is super tough. Only few ppl in the company are IC5 and above.

IC4 should not be very difficult, I know one who have a PhD + almost 3 years yoe have IC4. Agree IC5 is really rare.

I think prestige is only a part. Uber might be more “prestigious” but I’ll always take amazon over Uber

How much can a staff engineer get at Cruise?

      OP
I think it’s really a big range.. I know an IC4 getting about 400k, and an IC4 getting 310k, staff is IC5 and above not sure the comp range.. I think staff engineer is really high title as far as I know.

If it's valued at $11B already, is there a lot of upside left to make the stock options worthwhile? It's a great company and will likely release an amazing product, but I don't see how they can generate enough revenue to justify the valuation.

    • Cruise Automation CCCers
Based on breakdown for Waymo by some Wall Street guy, the valuation can be 3 parts, ride sharing, logistics, sell technology to car company. If they can get technology ready, It will definitely beat 11B valuation.
      Aug 22, 2018
    • Cruise Automation gargoyle
Softbank et al have done the same calculations. 11B is peanuts compared to the size of the global transportation industry.
      Sep 12, 2018
    • Matterport yesbutwhy
Assuming the strike price is based off of the 11B valuation, the options will be worth something only if the valuation exceed 11B by a lot. Maybe it reaches 22B or 33B, but to get there it must be twice as big as Lyft. How likely is that? Still an awesome company, but overvalued for it's own good.

      We get RSUs, not options.

Not as well known by the public as Uber/Lyft due to no consumer product, hopefully that'll change next year if able to execute on rideshare.
