But also not as fun as you think it sounds

Correct. I have a friend who works at a AAA game studio and he gave me a tour of the office. It was a cool floorplan and everyone had offices or were in fairly spacious pods with a few other folks. Everyone except that testers, that is. They were off in a corner of another floor crammed together.

Here is a tip: the gaming industry is based on working their people to suicide, and if that fails, a brutal layoff round.

Feel free to work there, but know that they'll squeeze all performance out of you for the lowest dollar, before kicking you to the curb. Be forewarned.

Customer service or quality assurance experience is key. Demonstrating the ability to think critically by outlining test scenarios that are not "happy path" will go a long way

You just apply. Testing is kinda the bottom of the totem pole. Be prepared to be treated like a second class citizen.

That mentality is changing rapidly as SDET's are closer to SWE's

I would love for that mentality to change. It's super toxic and not appropriate for a workplace.

Game testing is considered by many dev teams as a dirty shit job that they would not touch with a 10 feet pole. Be ready to be considered like a Guinea pig or a spare part that can be trashed as soon as you show signs of fatigue.

Many companies require certification through ASTQB, which isn’t too difficult to acquire. It would be worth signing up for and a good resume line item.

I hear you can sign up with major console brands and do part time gigs. If you are really into this job, you may want to ask around and see if there are any tech companies that are building tools around game testing and join them. This route seems more fruitful for career trajectory.
