Were there layoffs at Genentech recently? I have a phone interview with them next week but now a bit nervous this might be a bad time to head there.
They also make drugs for MS that costs an Arm and a Leg 😑. There maybe some satisfaction to get from working there knowing you're helping people, even if it costs
So the layoffs were just rumors and not actually happening?
Not really layoffs, more like "restructuring" of the commercial division. More people took buy out packages than they anticipated, probably because it's relatively easy to get a biotech job if you have experience in SSF since everyone and their brother has moved offices there locally. As long as you aren't going to the product manager role, most of the other divisions have already completed the restructure. I think the PMs go through theirs shortly so if you are interviewing there that might be where I hold off for a bit until the dust settles. Manufacturing, Research and Development organizations havent made any big changes as far as I recall, doubt they will since they don't report into the Genentech CEO, they go up through Roche. Which general position or division are you interviewing with, most likely I wouldn't worry about it. Honestly the restructure was done in a year with record bonus payout, this is more the new CEO making some changes as he saw fit.
Regulatory so I think I’ll be ok. Thank you for the insight
Roche loaded up with debt to buy out the rest of Genentech, and right now they are moving as much as they can to other cheaper location. Carlsbad and Europe as well. South City is pretty expensive.
Haven't seen that happening to any core functions, in fact the opposite has been true since the merger, they were hiring in most divisions with the exception of some infrastructure/support roles that became duplicate back in 2008, but those changes are long since past.
It is happening to manufacturing.
I thought that this was the place from Office Space that had a reputation for stealing staplers. I think that place burned down.
