Thinking of applying for a job at one of the "big players" (e.g., Apple, Amazon, Google, etc.), and wondering if there're any downsides to requesting an interview with a Front end flavor. The only point I've heard against a specialized interview was that you never know what exactly to prepare for, and the area to brush up is too broad. Versus ~5 good old algorithm interviews. What's your take on that?
Idk my front end interviews have been cray cray - at Google is comp science heavy l prob.the toughest int. I've been through, Amazon was very front end oriented which was a relief, haven't interviewed at Uber yet
I can give some insight for a few, currently a Full Stack Dev with emphasis on the Front End. I am currently interviewing with Google, Amazon, Airbnb, Facebook, and LinkedIn. Starting with Amazon, I was DM'd on LinkedIn about a general SDE role and after replying, I mentioned I mainly work in the front end and have 0 java experience, and asked if there are any available positions. The recruiter then referred me to another recruiter who was looking for Frontend devs, so I would ask a recruiter for it. Although the interview problems will still have CS questions, they have some front end portions. Google and Facebook also reached out via LinkedIn/email and I requested the same thing. In my case, they told me their engineers are usually generalists and they both banished me Leetcode, Grokking System Design, and CTCI I applied to a front end role for Airbnb and I am prepping for their tech screen, they put a heavy emphasis on Practical frontend questions, but some interviewers might ask LC easy-medium. And Finally, I got a Linkedin call from an employee referral for a UI Engineer role. Out of all 5 of these companies, I'd say their interview problems have the highest percentage of front end questions TLDR, still expect CS questions, but some companies will still test for front end knowledge. So make sure you brush up on your vanilla JS. For Google and Facebook, just apply as a generalist and get placed as a FE
What interview did you like the most 2/ how would you rate FE work in these companies 3/ did you get offers. If yes where? Joining Linkedin soon.
I haven’t done any yet. So no offers as of now. Amazon is on Monday, google later that same week, and the other three are gonna be in a 3 day window later this month. This is coming from recruiters, my referrals, and engineers I’ve spoken to at said companies. FE at Airbnb and LinkedIn always come up in the convo of great FE teams, if you can tolerate ember at LI, which is fine with me, I have exp. Facebook and amazon are team dependent. Facebook does have react, but they are my two lowest preferences due to poor WLB and review system.

Goog Employees Arrested
Google specifically messed up my front end SWE interviews. I was expected to have 2 FE 2 algo and one system design. It ended up as 4 algo and one front end interview and no System design.
