Generalist vs Specialist

People pay tons of money for specialists who have in depth understanding of a problem and can help architect/rearchitect the solution. Whereas a generalist is hired by a dozen and has worked on multiple layers of stack/domain - then for a new job is groomed for a specific job/task. Who would you rather be?

Not another human nature commenter, NOOO! Humans are naturally generalists. We evolved to gain a WIDE skill set to protect the continuity of our genes.

You are often paid less as a specialist as you can’t easily change jobs to chase higher TC. Your company may be the only one working on the problem and may not pay very well.

Be a specialist, and then become obsolete when your specialty is replaced or is cost effective only at massive scale relative to other tech (*cough* Java *cough*)
