Ghosting/ Unprofessional

Jun 3 21 Comments

I was contacted by the recruiter for a position with the Microsoft Hololens team. We agreed to have a conversation and talk further about the position. He did not call, nor had the courtesy to leave a message. It is highly unprofessional and leaves a bad taste in the candidates mouth.

It’s normal. I was contacted by a recruiter from Apple and poof - disappeared!

Something being commonplace doesn't make it normal.

why is the candidate referring to himself in the third person

He's not. The last sentence is referring to candidates in general, rather than himself specifically.

Empathy for recruiters is something you should develop. They are usually temps with high quotas who make a fraction of what you will.

      Irrelevant to common communication courtesy.

  • I know it’s unpleasant. I was on the wrong end of it before too. But that is just how it is. If I don’t hear back in a week, I will assume that we are not moving ahead and move on.

If Satya is your friend, you probably can make them pay for being unprofessional or nasty to you, but for most of us here, yeah just move on. You are not obligated to work for them if they fly you in for a free night stay and a day of food. Same thing, they are not obligated to make your life better by setting you up for an opportunity with their company... that’s how I make peace with this.

MS recruiters are notoriously poor at communication, don't take it personally. Also try and get with a different recruiter, they usually don't coordinate.

  • Sometimes the recruiter might have moved on from that company.

I've had this happen with a HoloLens team recruiter before lol. Was it for an MS position in Canada?

Because of Blind, I've recently been learning that this is common. So far I thought it was just me. I've had six Amazon recruiters that have contacted me in the past 7 - 8 months and every one of them disappeared after the initial chat.

I had an Amazon onsite interview a couple years back where I shat and puked all over myself real bad and bombed the loop. I thought I was permanently blacklisted after that. My impression about these ghosting recruiters was that once they talked to me and pulled up my past interview performance, they just ran.

One of these recruiters was all cheerful and bubbly during the first half of the call and in the middle there was suddenly an awkward pause for a minute and then the recruiter's tone completely changed over to indifference and disinterest. She probably pulled up my past interview performance record in the middle of the call. LOL.
