Giving notice at work

Hi there, So I got a new job (yay) and am wondering about how to give notice at work as I have never done it and I’m super anxious about it. Any advice would be amazing. Thanks!!

I would suggest a formal letter of resignation.

Just ask your boss for a minute and tell him. It'll be awkward but will be fine. Also if you're only quitting because of comp let them know. They may counter. If there's nothing they can do to keep you let it be known to save everyone some grief

This. Ask for a 1:1 with your manager and tell them face-to-face. Generally, you should give them this news 2 weeks in advance. Then you can write a letter of resignation that you send to the relevant teams at your company.

This is exactly what I've done. The conversation is hard but just blurt it out and get the news out of your mouth first. The rest of the conversation will be processing it with them. The formal letter can come after, and allow them a chance to counter, if you're still interested in the team.

Do you have any RSU's vesting on the 15th? If so, I'd try to delay your new start date so your shares can vest before you resign. Otherwise, write a short and simple resignation letter. Don't say why you are resigning or where you are going, just say that the letter is to notify the company of your resignation. Have a 1:1 with your manager. Tell you manager with as few details as possible For example, just say you have a really good opportunity. And then offer the written letter since your manager will probably need it.

Going to be in the same situation soon and have been playing things in my mind how it will happen. Tips are helpful! It becomes difficult as current work is going well too. Just that the offer is a promotion that would take long to get in my current job.

I do have RSUs vesting on the 15th but if my last day is the 17th I still get them right?

Depends. If they walk you then you might not. I'd wait to resign until the day after. How much do you trust your boss?

Yeah. Don’t fuck this up. Resign _after_ the shares have vested. Ask new gig for an extra couple of weeks if needed. Be honest on the why.

Because I’m still employed

I recommend talking about resignation on or after vesting to be safe ..

Yeah just wait for it to vest, it's stupid to lose a big chunk of money over a couple weeks.

Tell your boss firing your next 1:1, and follow up with an email with formal statement, just to your boss. They'll forward it along and do what's needed
