I had flown from another state and I reached the hotel very late the night before the day of the interview and I was studying overnight. So, unfortunately, I was running late to the onsite interview by 40 mins the next day but I informed the recruiter about the delay already. The interview started at 10:40 am instead at 10 am. Round 1 (10:40 am - 11:40 am) with 2 interviewers: I was told about an existing system and asked to find the bottleneck in the system and improve the performance. I explained my approaches to them but none of the interviewers were looking happy. Finally the interviewer proposed an approach but I proposed the same approach already in a different way - not sure if they got that or not, when I had proposed that approach. Round 2 (11:40 am - 12:40 pm) with 2 interviewers: System design question I felt that they were satisfied with my answers and approaches. â Short lunch because I was late: 12:40 pm to 1 pm Round 3 (1:00 pm - 2:10 pm) with 2 interviewers: System design question In the beginning, one of the interviewer from the round 1 came and talked something to one of the interviewers in the current round. However, the current round continued. I felt that they were satisfied with my answers and approaches. At end, the other interviewer who did not speak to the interviewer from round 1 said I would have 1 more round but the interviewer who spoke to the interviewer from round 1 said this was my last round. The other interviewer also agreed with him. My question: I had been told that there would be 2-5 rounds in the onsite interview and it could last up to 2-5 hours ranging from coding, system design and behavioral questions. But, I did not have any coding round (I had 2 tech phone rounds before my onsite interview) in my onsite interview. I am confused about this experience and I donât know what to expect. Did I screw up myself? Please share your thoughts. Thank you in advance!
Please exercise your grammar. It's very hard to understand what you're trying to say
One would "improve" grammar usage, not "exercise" it (which is awkward diction in this context).
Well, I'd say a way to improve grammar is through exercising it (read/write situations, having someone to proofread your texts), but I get your point.
Yeah you fucked up. Goldman is old school. 40 minutes??? How do you fuck up that bad
He was studying all night.
Thats his fuck up. If he cared enough he would have prepped overtime.
How was their workplace? Are investment bankers enjoying better workplace than tech there?
I find it amusing theyâd ask system design questions like theyâre pretending to be FANG. đ
You fucked up! Next!
You clearly got cut. Maybe it was being late, maybe it was your answers. 40 min late is a deal breaker in most ppls book. I would have expected someone to already know the information or prepped before they came. It's worse that you were late because you didn't have a handle on the material and had to cram the night before. It's not like it was at 7:30 am, it was at 10. My guess was they put you in a hotel fairly close as well. So you can't really blame it on the train or anything. Chalk it up to a botched interview and learn from it. There just isn't an excuse for being 40 min late.
Lol damn thatâs a lot of systems design, what role is this for?
I work at GS, and give interviews regularly. This honestly sounds normal to me. Donât expect a coding session in the final round as we weed out those who canât write code early on (those early coding rounds you had in round 1/2). Final round is more to feel you out and see your communication style/thought process through system design, or even explanations of work on your resume.
To be clear - I had 2 coding rounds before my onsite interview but 0 coding round in the onsite interview. Is this still normal?
Yes, completely normal.
The only thing thatâs not normal is you are 40min late!! Lmao
Stuff happens so I don't think coming late is a killer. I was an hour late to a Lehman interview due to getting lost after a red eye etc and it was fine as long as you did well in the rest. GS is very picky about hiring only stars that fit the mold. Also GS isn't what it once was - all banking is a dead end you would be foolish to join banks now as a tech person. Note I've had coding Qs on phone screen and 1st rounds at GS and other banks so it's quite random depending who setup the interviews..
I understand your point and thank you for sharing your thoughts. I appreciate that!
