I’ve only been at Google for 6 months and absolutely love it. BUT...

Got contacted by a recruiter at Snap and wanted to explore it just for the heck of it. Didn’t think I’ll get an offer but here we are!!

I’ve got around 8 years experience. TC at Google is ~300K (L4). I got downleveled when got hired at G but told Snap I’m L5 with 350K TC.

Their offer is ~400K. I haven’t negotiated with them yet so I’m guessing I can bump it up.

So here we are: in reality I’m getting almost $100K more per year but at a company that I HATE their product and don’t believe in it at all. The company itself seemed pretty cool and their engineers were smart and friendly. They also had layoffs recently and id have to move to LA from the Bay Area (family of 3, working wife)

I’ll most likely decline the offer and STOP interviewing for fun until I’m actually ready to leave. But what would you guys do?

I would short snap stocks while being in Google.

Hmm if you hate their product it will be hard to stick with them in volatile times. Snap is going to have plenty of them

Just to clarify, you lied to snap about your level at google? Not smart if they do any background check (lying about tc is fine )

Titles are though right? I think T5 is “Senior”

Yes, background check will show no senior level and at that point nothing good is going to happen

The smart thing to do is to use this Snap offer to your advantage and interview at a few other companies.

Facebook, Airbnb, Uber, Lyft, etc. If any of them offer you $400+ TC (you can use your snap offer to negotiate) and you believe in their product, then you may feel more comfortable joining that company.

This all hinges on your ability to ask Snap to hold the offer for 2-3 weeks (very possible) and your ability to schedule the others interviews in that time frame (also possible).

:) I personally don’t think I was downleveled. But people on Blind told me I was downleveled. Also, I see many people at G with less than 10 years of experience at L5 and in a few cases L6!!!

Just check their tenure at teams/ and when they got promoted at go/whogotp

And yes, it’s easier to promote internally than come as L5

Get the offer in writing and show it to Google. Have your boss match and then some to keep you. Assuming you’re a talented mother fucker they want to keep

Won’t that affect credibility In current team. May be u can do this and move from current google team
      Mar 22, 2018
    • Apple Rvthnr
If anything, your credibility may go up and you’ll show your boss you have a spine and are willing to advocate.

Or you can keep your head down because you don’t want to “bother anyone” / “loose credibility.”

This is how business works. The strong take advantage of the weak. Those without a vision or appetite for risk tend to work for those that have a vision and take risks.

I suspect you can get at least a 50k bump at Google with a promo soon enough. Ask if snap can hold this offer for 6 months. Maybe you can even tell your manager about this. See what you can get at goog

I hate to ask for money since I’m very new. Regarding promo, I’m busting my ass right now and doing L5 projects to get promoted but realistically I don’t think it will happen this time around (but you never know). They won’t be able to hold off for 6 months. They need to fill the position as soon as possible (or so they say)

Why not move to snap and move to google back if it doesn’t work out? Although you have to interview again.

I would say go for it. And it might open up some more doors later. Since you have lot of experience i would you will be much more valued in Snap than google. I would say continue your fun with interviewing ( you enjoy it right) that will keep your chances of getting into google or what ever best is.

I was in a similar situation. I took an offer from a company I didn’t believe in because they paid so much more. But I was miserable. Found a role I love at MS. I make less despite being 2 career stages higher, but I’m much happier.

Google may increase your total comp if you negotiate with your offer as leverage.
