Google : reject offer or tell them not to give me an offer?

I got an HC approval for L4 offer and I don’t think I would take it, even if I get the high end of the total comp band my recruiter thought he could get me. He said he’d try to get me the best he could and told me to think of a comp number that I would need to take the offer. What are the pros/cons of A) saying I would accept a 250k offer which is the upper bound ish vs B) telling them I don’t want an L4 offer and I’d rather re interview in a 6mo or a year? The motivation behind A would be the hope that another company would give me more. I have two on sites this coming week... Current role : Fb research IC4 TC 230k

250k is definitely not the maximum possible for L4 in Bay Area and NYC. Get competing offers and negotiate.

RS comp is equivalent to SWE at Google

Prettt sure L4 can get to 300k easy. Can push 30-50k more for extraordinary situations. Either way if you dont want L4, just tell them. Maybe they ll give you a followup interview for L5

Don’t tell them not to make you an offer. Maybe you won’t be able to make an agreement with them but there is no harm in trying

Why don’t you promote to 5 at FB instead?

300k is not likely for L4 research

Even if you get a lowball offer there's nothing stopping you from interviewing for a higher level in a year.

Is 20k should be the main reason for changing of job ? I believe you might want to think if this is a more interesting mission ? A better company culture ? More than a decision 100% based on money

Primary reason to leave is hard feeling that I’ve developed toward the company, but i also want to leave for a promotion not to make the same salary. I’m giving up a good deal of credibility, influence, and institutional knowledge that has economic value

I think it’s better to get the numbers, there is no downside here from getting the numbers. If you get offers from the other two onsites, you can use that to negotiate with Google and see if they budge. Also, your two new onsites would be very happy for you to turn down the Goog offer because then they have less competition.
