How is the CE role? I have this pre-conceived notion that’s it’s just dealing with grumpy IT/Ops types at the customer.
What kinds of skill sets would a good CE make?
Thinking about moving from SDE to something different due to burnout.
I’m moving to GC CE from MSFT CSA role which from what I understand is similar to Sales Engineer / Customer Engineer role at Google. It’s far from just dealing with grumpy IT types but we do occasionally get those. I believe these are key skills for the role:
- Social intelligence as this is a customer facing role
- White boarding and overall strong communication skills
- Critical thinking
- Creative problem solving
The core of the job revolves around architecting and helping customers to implement scalable, secure, resilient and cost efficient cloud based systems. My typical day would consist of L100 presentations, demos, PoCs and some troubleshooting with grumpy IT folks.

Very helpful. Thanks so much for the info. I’ve explored these types of roles in the past and thinking of making the plunge.
