I had a interview with Google back in December for an FTE position, but did not get in. (Got to on-site, and did well afaik.) A recruiter is now getting in touch with me for a contract position at similar pay rates (but on contract, obviously), but given that the FTE position is what I was aiming for initially, I'm not sure I want to signal to Google that I'm available as a contractor. Also, I heard that there is a lifetime number of interviews Google will give you. If so, do contractor interviews count against that? Tl;Dr: Should I take Google's contract role, or should I hold out for another FTE shot later?
Take a role at Google as TVC and see first hand that Google is not that special (anymore). So you can move on and get better offer somewhere else.
I'm all ears if you have suggestions. In Seattle, it seems to be Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and Boeing. I would love to be proven wrong though.
I am almost sure that you can have better chance getting into Google as tvc than as outsider. Think of the connections you can make. Better to work inside google for a year than outside. Amazon is a shitty place so can’t recommend
Do you have to interview for the contract position? Because if you don’t, then google is just trying to save money over here by hiring you as a contractor.
That's my concern as well. I don't really want to signal that I'm available on the cheap.
lol you’re done for
I've heard that, but don't know for certain. Would appreciate anyone confirming or denying that.
What’s FTE?
Full time equivalent, or basically a direct-hire.
Thought you interviewed for Front End position lol
Was this an internal recruiter or headhunter?
If you are fte at msft it makes no sense to be a tvc at goog. Unlike at msft, its very hard for vendors to transition fulltime because its not up to a single hiring manager who might know you well personally- instead it goes through a hiring committee just like every other external candidates
I'm a contractor at Microsoft as well. I miss having health insurance and the second class citizen world grinds on me a bit, hence why I'm aiming at FTE positions as a preference.
This isn’t completely true. Whereas with external hires, it’s all about performance on the interview, with transfers there’s typically more weight on performance reviews. Additionally, I’ve heard that transfer interviews tend to be easier than external interviews due to bias.
