Got an offer from Google (L6 TC ~$500k). Currently an EM at F. Some of the teams are looking for TL/M while others are looking for EM. What's the difference between the roles in G? What is more recommended for someone new?
And you have a separate product owner ?
L6 TLM = more work without benefits
TIL 500K Tc is lowball for an engineering manager lol
FB has the same role diff. How come you dont know?
TLM does two jobs and gets paid for one.
TL/M, tech lead first. Has some management duties but is expected to be hands on leading the technical aspect of a team. EM, manager first. Has some technical ability and can speak for the team, but first duty is HR management.
What is the difference between management duties? Are they expected to have same number of direct reports?
No, usually EMs have more reports and aren’t expected to be the technical leaders, though they still have to be technical. Basically it comes down to when you are evaluated and when you think of yourself, is it more as a manager or more as an architect/technical SME?
