Google Eng Res vs SWE elsewhere

I flubbed some of my interviews for Google SWE (New grad, L3) and was referred to the Engineering Residency program where it looks like i’d just have one more phone screen to get the job. I’d love to work at Google, and I’d be able to be in NY (one of the location options for the program) which is my top choice city, but in all honesty I’m concerned about taking a “remedial” position in terms of my resume and ego.

I already have offers for SWE positions at Microsoft, an SF unicorn, and a NY fintech company with TC around ~160k for each (very roughly). Google Eng Res would be ~100k TC and only a ~1 year contract (with probable conversion to SWE after). I’m not very concerned about money since either way I’ll probably be making around the same after a year.

I’d love to hear from someone who has made a similar decision. Is Eng Res seen as a “remedial” program internally? Is it a fun program to be in socially or is it stressful because of the contract nature of the job?

EngRes is a temp position leveled at L2. Not worth it. Even if an EngRes gets converted, the next level is still the lowest tier of L3 with minimal TC.

Then how will they ever retain talent? Didn't think Google would do this.

This compensation is lower than Cisco salary.

Well, solid CS talents get L3 SWE offers directly. Even if they didn't meet SWE hiring bar, they can be hired as SETI.

It's supposed to lower the bar so that "hidden genius" can come and bring "diversity".
Don't leave that diversity hire scar on your resume if you are a qualified SWE.

Take one of the SWE roles. Your starting salary/role can have a big impact on your career earning and growth potential. You can always work at Google in the future.
