Has Google lowered its hiring bar? Is it easier to get into Google now than it was 5 years ago? 10 years ago? Curious to hear what Googlers think, especially those that have served in hiring committees and interview panels. TC 200k, 7 yoe (because someone will inevitably ask :p)
I think the bar has been lower since I got in. But don't everyone.
Well you didn't get in so... maybe not that low
Bar is very subjective term and depends upon individuals involve. Stop generalizing. If you want in give it a shot. Anyway bar is no parameter of job satisfaction. So don't overthink on it.
Friend at Google informed me that the quality of their hiring practices has decreased according to internal stats. Hiring is performing at something like ~70%. And based on my observation of people in my network getting hired by Google, the bar has been lowered (slightly) mostly to fill demand. They're growing like crazy and opening offices everywhere so they kinda have no choice but to consider people who aren't the top 5-10% of society. Um so ya apply now but use referrals.
Hiring is performing at 70% of what? We need units folks
Sorry I think this friend said something like their performance is around ~70% or the quality of their hiring practices is around 70%. Don't remember because my takeaway was that their hiring bar lowered. Not hiring with the same exact standards as they were a few yrs ago for instance. Which makes sense. A company of that magnitude and that kind of growth trajectory would have a hard time maintaining their standards. Plus, humans are the weakest link in security as well as in hiring. Even with processes and checks in place.
I think all companies lowered their bar in last two years.
You think it's higher than FB?
Hard times make for great men, Great men bring good time, Good times leads to weak men. Itās the good time where weak men can survive. The infra and tech knowledge built up is so solid that they can now bring in as much diversity as they want, and the company will still do great.
I know about at least two infra orgs that don't play the diversity game. Because it's risky.
"...as much diversity as they want..." implies that diversity == low bar. So let me guess you are a white male? During my time in tech, i have come to learn that sometimes minorities don't get the job not because they are below the bar but quite often because they might not fit in a non-diverse team and risk upsetting existing Engineers, which aeyer has referred to as "the diversity game"
I think in some sense it was lowered: now Google works hard to increase its diversity hires. Some go as far as outright banning white and Asian men (Wilberg lawsuit) some use more subtle ways. These diversity quota hires and promotions will inevitably lower the bar as they're hired and promoted not based on merit but preferential treatment and force out otherwise better candidates.
I was on HC for years, and I don't think it did. But 8 years ago there was no leetcode, careercup, hackerrank and all those training grounds. So nowadays it's much easier to "crack" the interview because all the questions are more or less known in advance.
But isnāt Google one of the first companies that started asking these types of interview questions in the first place? Then other companies wanted to be like Google and adopted the same interview questions. These training grounds are a response to what Google started.
What you said proved bar is lower now
Not sure about Google but get into Facebook now is piece of cake š
Lol how so?
