Google L3 SWE offer, YOE: 13

Jun 7 41 Comments

Hi all,

TC: 135, YOE: 13, non FAANG, but reputable company.

Got L3 SWE offer @ 175, no competing offers (my mistake, I know).

People who accepted such low ball offers - how did it end for you?
How was your career progression? How is working as L3 if you are a senior engineer?

The offer does not seem acceptable to me, and I'm 99% rejecting it. Just looking for peer validation I guess.

Let them know how insulting the offer is. Ask for L4, and be willing to drop out

Stop acting like a child. I'm not here to prove anything to anyone.
I'm asking senior people who accepted L3 offers for their input.

I feel like this guy is trolling, theres no way with 13 yoe you will be slotted in L3. One of my coworkers recently went there as L4 with 2 yoe

Unfortunately not trolling. Honestly, I still can't believe it either:)

  • It's kinda standard for an L3 offer, but 13 YOE... Is it all as a SWE or something else?

    • OP
All SWE, good projects and good Github profile.

Is this in the Bay Area? If yes, then you could push TC more. But as others said, if this is a SWE position, you should really be aiming for a L4 offer or even L5

Jup! No negotiation possible, which is even more insulting, so, dropping.

Did they give the first number or did you?

I did, with the real one.

Ask them if you can do a few more interviews and get L4. L5 might be hard but you could try

That's insulting for +10yoe. Don't take it otherwise when you join and find out people do nothing make way more than you, all you wanna do is leave. Go interview Facebook. More fair in terms of pays

That is my understanding of the situation as well. This is why I'm interested how others that might have accepted such offers coped with it.

Whatโ€™s your impression of how you performed in the interview?

3 coding great, design good (could have gone better), behavioral I'm not sure (I think this was the first interview for my interviewer, just joined G)

Sounds like a low ball offer, but it's still a nice raise, if you don't have other options, better to accept it and working on the areas you need to improve and interview again in a year or so.

This offer at 13yoe is too low. Is this what offered to those coming from Non FANG. What if my current TC is higher? Will they still offer the same L3?
    Jun 7 6
    • Marvell elkimpact
Yeah if the current TC is 135k then certainly candidate would be more than willing to join at 175k especially if its Google. But itโ€™d be interesting to see if they consider the current TC at all. Iโ€™m sure iโ€™ll scream my current tc if someone offered me this lowball offer.

    • OP
If TC is the only thing you are looking for, sure. But I'm not that interested in this part - my main question was how is the L3 role for senior people.

Going from tech lead to bug fixes seems a bit extreme.

Then ditch google and interview somewhere else to get a better offer. No need to be that salty man
      Jun 7
    • OP
I must have come off the wrong way, sorry:) no intention to be salty - I'm just "very surprised" by the L3 offer, since it does not align with my career so far.

Working at Google was my goal for some time now, and I need to re-evaluate either my perception of myself, or my perception of Google.
      Jun 7
    • Marvell elkimpact
Not only the TC. What if you join at this TC and then your manager gives you additional responsibility realizing your yoe and potential. Then youโ€™d be doing all the jobs of a team lead with the TC less than a new grad. Iโ€™m appalled at what this has come to.

Interview somewhere else. But then again itโ€™s still a bump so. Here at google not everyone is an L5 at 4 yoe. There are many L3 at 30 years old, L4 at 40 years old, and L5 at 50+ years old
    Jun 7 5
    • OP
Yes, in pay. But not even remotely in responsibility and freedom.
      Jun 7
    • Google janest
What other offers do you have? Just because you have 13 yoe doesnt mean that you will be an L6 or something. Can other companies give you a higher level or comp?
      Jun 7
    • OP
Sure not, but I also for sure cannot be bunched with new grads.

No, no competing offers, but this is beside the point. The offer is either acceptable or unacceptable on its own.

The main point of the post is to discuss how other senior people sailed in a L3 role and how their career progressed.

Arguing about which level or compensation level is not very useful.

Then prove to google that you can get high offers somewhere else. They can bump L3 up to 260k + sign on if they really want you
      Jun 7
    • OP
I will just accept the competing offer in this case:)

    Op,

Is 175k base or tc? What's tc?

Which domain your prior exp in?

with similar yoe i think l3 is too low.

Last yr when i interviewed i thought they were considering me for l5, but recruiter later told me they did interview me for L4. I thought it went well, but no offered them saying L3 would be too low.
    Jun 7 2
    • OP
      Its TC. All experience SWE.
      Jun 7
    • Cadence qwer09
Like, what field/type of SWE? Not all swe experiences are same.
      Jun 7
  • Marvell elkimpact
Is this 13yoe in US or some experience outside US too? I was once lowballed by a company that cited this reason.

Delay making the decision for as long as possible. Google offer is good for a year. Ask your recruiter if you can do additional rounds for L4. And of course interview elsewhere.
