Google L3 compensation

Got an offer from Google today (San Bruno location) 3.5 years of industry experience SWE L3 level 125K base 15-25% annual bonus 160K stocks (vesting over 4 years) 15K joining bonus It is near my current compensation of 145K base (TC 200K) I have a competing verbal offer from a public company (for 300K TC) but Google is not considering it since it seems high to them and they need an offer letter. No way for me to convince them since the company won't give an offer letter unless I verbally agree to them. Does this seem reasonable? I personally felt it is lower than my expectations since it is not even meeting my current compensation.

Low ball

Verbally agree and get a written offer. Then, if Google matches or beats the other company, apologize to the first company and take the Google offer. You have to look out for yourself.

Sorry, no disrespect but I can't lose my integrity over getting some more money. Thanks for three suggestion though.

I understand. I guess we see things differently. With the information you have now, you’re accepting the other offer. Things can change though and companies understand that. Notice, I said “if” Google counters. If they don’t, then you proceed with the other company. If Google comes back with a counter, then the situation has changed and you have to re-evaluate. Also, it’s not just about money. It’s also about the next several years of your life and potentially your career trajectory. Not sure how many times you have changed jobs but companies counter all the time.

That’s about right for L3, even a bit high. 1 things to consider... You will probably get 15% bonus, not more, until next year. Despite your yoe, Google is likely to rate you a CME (consistently meets expectations) on you first calibration next year, regardless of how great you do.

Really depends on the manager. I’ve seen some that have most everyone at CE or Superb and seen some where you’d be lucky to get OE. If you are CM after first year, I recommend immediately switching teams

What’s the role? SWE?

Yes

If you don’t show the competing offer, Google won’t budge!

How long did it take for you to get an offer from your interview date?

Little less than 2 weeks

Can you make the public company?

Just *very politely* tell the Google recruiter the situation, and be ready to accept the offer from the other company, cause most likely Google will pass. Being polite will keep the door open for reconsidering in few months

What’s the other company? They are paying very well!

Btw this other offer sounds amazing. You will get another crack at Google, but 300k TC at 3.5 yoe is a nice accomplishment. If you accept that now, it will have snowball benefits for the rest of your SWE career. You should really consider taking it if you have no close offers. I think your compensation progression is way more impressive than the Google brand. Plus you can use money, for house/retirement/etc.
