Google L3 offer

Just got yes from hiring committee and currently in team matching stage.
I’m 61 in MS and got L3 from google. I should get 4-5 strong hires as the interviews went very smoothly.
I can deal with the down level, but recruiter says L3 base range should be around 110k.
?????

Immediately lose interest to move on. Feel no respect at all.

You’re 61 years old? How many years of relevant experience? Base will be 120k for Bay Area with 15% annual target bonus and maybe around 25k annual stock. Minimum. You can negotiate too

Google L3 base can go up to ~$130k if needed but where they shine is equity. They can easily give you a total comp over $200k when you include bonus, equity and sign-on, which Microsoft would really struggle to compete with.

However, as others have mentioned, promos at Google are super slow and are in the order of years (not months).

I also have been getting lots of quick promos at Microsoft and have a Google offer right now (for L4), so I'm still trying to see how I can keep the same career velocity if I go there. For now I would say Microsoft is excellent for fast growth at your level, especially if you have a good team/manager which it sounds like you do.

Is there any other company having so many levels like MS? Especially for low/mid level (<=65). It makes MS people happier to see promotion more frequently, but the difference between levels in MS is less than others, both in TC and scope.

In terms of TC, if you are performing really well then the combination of high merit increase + promo raise end up making a difference relatively quickly. For example, I had a base of $145k at L61.

And anyway, having a fast promo track record (even for within band promos) can help build a case for future fast across-band promos, which have a much more significant TC and responsibility bump.

L61’s refresh target is below 10k, right? For top performer, you can get 2x of that. Average L3 got significant more refresh than that, easily fill that base diff. And, you are talking about top performer, L3’s base can be high as well.

True, I am not trying to say that Microsoft will always pay more than Google. But just that Microsoft pay is not bad at that level and growth can potentially be faster

I think as long as you’re happy and learning, it’s ok to stay. MS is a good company. I’ve been there for many years. It’s my dream company when I was young. I knew many good engineers still there.

I mainly want to point two things, 1.) for similar performance and level, G’s pay is significant better most of time. 2.) MS’s promotion may or may not matter a lot. Many years ago, MS only had 6-7 levels, but changed to current system to make people feel happier.

61 maps to L3 is normal. In terms of base, how much you make now? If not too high, I believe there is room to negotiate and ask for match.

125k in ms. Even new grad base should be higher than 110k.
      Jan 17
    • Google oira
Tell recruiter you won’t accept lower base if you care it a lot. I think 125k is not hard to match if we really want you.

On the other hand, 15k diff before tax makes little difference after tax, and, G’s refresh is far more better than MS if you consider TC. But you need to make your own decision how important that diff to you.

Basically you are SDE2 with 1.5 yoe. You managed to pull off 59 to 60 and 60 to 61 in 6 months each. This is very abnormal. You must be a rock star. With such a high growth, you shouldn't even think of moving because its a good future for you at MSFT which not even GOOG can promise of such high growth + MSFT has invested huge on you.

Ask recruiter if you can try L4 with additional interviews

Yeah, I asked that but didn’t work. I have 1.5 yoe so that may be the reason. Anyway if the offer is going low like this, I don’t see any reason to accept. Actually i feel good about my current team in MS :)

If you decide to reject, Google offers remain for 1 year. (Friend is a manager at Google.) See if you can get a promotion at MS during that time, then reach out to the recruiter again...

@Jio that has to be illegal. No way.
      Jan 18
    • Microsoft Jio
@top kek, illegal or not, they might do it. It is also illegal to share interview questions but no one gave a fuck isn’t it as long as they don’t get caught.

They sometime do it, depending on the recruiter and manager. Sometime they find out you are full of shit, they won’t tell you, they just won’t match.

I think they could not ask your current and past compensation but they could ask you to show them offer. Of course you have rights to politely reject that request and say that’s under NDA or according to your own work ethic

  • L3 works out to about $155k in the Bay area when you add in the stock + bonus that 90% of employees get. This is a poverty salary in the Bay area and will be eaten up completely if you want to live in a 2-br rental apartment.
