Worried that our top performer is an attrition risk. How do managers handle this?
L3 offer: 120k base/200k rsu/15k sign on - low risk, high job security Startup: 160k base, 7% of the company, 10k sign on, seat at the board, remote anywhere in the US What would you pick? I have a 2 year old so it's a big decision for me. Startup's revenue was 1.9 mil last year. Thanks!
Startup's stock will probably do better than GOOG
For me the biggest reason to go for CTO is the opportunity to be in the driver seat and make changes you believe in. A very rare opportunity that does not come often.
Thank you, I am thinking the same way myself
Google L5 would be a tough choice. But if you are that good (startup CTO material), don't take an L3 role. Get some more experience, crank for a few years, either you bank some money at the startup or go back to FAANG at senior level where you are generating happy cash flow.
Do you feel you have the skill necessary to be CTO if you were matched only as L3 at google?
Your ability to regurgitate leetcode on a whiteboard is actually not very representative of your ability to write quality software, let alone lead others in doing so.
I didn't practice much on Leetcode, so my interviews didn't go as someone who practiced way more than me. I have worked with the startup founder as a consultant before, and have a bit more experience on the business end of things than as a SWE I think that's why I got the offer for the CTO opening
How many YOE? I'd say go to Google first, learn , then go to a startup.
Skills learned at Google vs skills learned at a startup are completely different. The thinking of joining a FANG first is a fallacy.
28 year old - 1.5 as a SWE, 2 as a business owner (biz still active), 5 in IT before that
L3 at Google is an insult. That’s the same level as 21 or 22 year old returning interns. Is that what you want?
I am not sure, I always dreamt about Google when I started in IT - big decision
Don't be stupid, because of people doing this Google can pull this down level garbage off all the time
If you join the startup, you could always go back to Google if you want security.
Startup any day
L5 (at least) vs CTO would’ve been a fair comparison. For L3, CTO at that TC is a clear winner.
If you believe in the startup then go with the startup. It's not very high risk because 160k base is livable even in bay area. And if you got G offer you can get an offer again if the startup fails. Also G offer should be good for 1 year
Thank you, I appreciate the feedback. I think I do, yet I'll have to dig in a bit deeper on their business model and goals I believe before I make a decision
