Hi, I am sde2 with Amazon with total experience of 7 years (2 yrs before Amazon). I have received L4 offer from Google, which is equivalent to sde2 in Amazon. Should I wait to get promoted to sde3 ( manager says 3-6 months, but I would consider 1 year to be safe) Or jump the ship now? Promotions in Google are dicey, so unsure if it would be right move in long term. I want myself to be working with more responsibilities and at senior level in 2 years. Is getting promoted in 2 years from L4 to L5 in Google reasonable for high T4 external hires? I am TT in amazon.
Not worth moving now for 10% bump if you are less than a year from Sr. SDE. Promotion at G will take a lot more than a year in all likelihood.
10% bump is nothing after tax, don’t do it if all you care is money. Get those AMZN RSU $$
It's hard to get an L5 external offer with less than 10 years experience. Even if you make L6 at Amazon in at year there's still a good chance you'll get another L4 offer at that time. As for comp, G doesn't take your initial grant into consideration when you get additional stock grants whereas Amazon recapitalizes all unvested gains. If money is your objective then you're mostly betting on how much AMZN will appreciate relative to GOOG.
Similar question and sorry to hijack. If I have like 15 years of experience and is currently already about L6 at Amazon, how likely will they offer me L4 at G? Assume I did ok in interview.
If you just did OK then you'll get L4. If you did really well then it's definitely L5. You've 15 years of experience and it's unlikely they will downlevel you unless you bombed one round.
How confident are you that manager will honor his word to promote you in 3-6 months? The risk is that even if you get sde3 in amazon, that does not guarantee you E5 in google, but then you will get a much higher chance of getting E5. I would think that in general, it is easier to get to sde3 in amazon than to get to E5 in google.
Definitely agree. Getting L5 is not easier for industry hires. However, I know several googlers promoted to L5 in around 4-5 years. They joined out of school.
Jump. Jump as fast as you can away from Amazon. Amazon has great people but the culture destroys your soul.
Getting promoted to t5 in 2 years is very doable. I did it but I had 17 years of experience when I joined and I made it a goal that I took very seriously. I.e. I attended the promo information sessions whenever I could etc. Of course promo is changing substantially at Google right now. I have no idea what it will look like in 2 years. Comp will grow way faster at Google sure to refreshes that attack on top of each other. I started with a30 percent raise but ended up at 2x in 3 years. Of course, I was coming from a place that paid substantially lower than Amazon
Are you getting a good bump on your salary? Then yes, because even if you've 8 years of experience, making to L5 at google is hard.
Not much, about 10% compared to amazon total comp at current amzn stock price, which is likely to grow 30+% yoy.
Then you know the answer. Do you think your manager would try to retain you if you consider to quit? It's worth trying to tell your manager that you've an offer from Google. May be he tries to match the comp but I wouldn't recommend this option because it could go either way.
