All three compinents can be improved. This seems to be a L4 offer.

      I've seen L4 offers at over 300k TC. 300k is 90 percentile. For L4

L4 offers at over a 300k are very rare. 300k being 90th percentile for L4 is for current TC, not offer amount. Current TC also includes stacked refreshers every year and increase in stock price.

So what would be a fair L5 offer?

      About 330k I guess

They are saying 320-330k might not get approved. Starting to sound more and more like BS

Lowballed. You better go as L4 with this. TC isn't worth the responsibility. Take it from a new L5 hire myself.

@Joker why are you expected to be productive before learning/ramping up on Google’s tools? That sounds like a problem with your manager’s expectations
      Jun 1, 2018
    • Google Joker!
Well not as much productive as more of self sufficient. Basically I have to come up with ideas what I should work on. They don't give me projects. It's awkward to define a well project when I don't know the tools yet.

Lol wasted in PhD... Joker, did you have to show your other offer when negotiating?

    OP
Are Google salaries in decline or I'm getting bullshitted?

They're saying how this offer is good and how they doubts they can even match my other non-FANG offer or my inflated Amazon comp.

What do you mean by A/B testing? I'm a guinea pig for Google?
      Jun 1, 2018
    • Facebook gLKg44
Actually it makes sense. There's a list of companies (which gets updated somewhat regularly) that the compensation committee has authorized as competitors and are willing to match offers against. Your other company probably isn't one. Current comp is also generally not matched if it's due to ridiculous stock appreciation.

      OP
Well, then I'll just walk. Google name is not worth $50k/yr to me and a compromise in the type of work I would be doing.

What is amusing is I'm not expecting some out of band comp. Just give me the median for the role or thereabouts. I thought Google would pay L5 SWE $310-330k. It seems salary reports are either not accurate or Google thinks I'm desperate.

On the other hand you are on the lower end of L5. During review you will have a big increase in pay.

Yeah, like bottom 5% comp for L5 SWE. Not sure how long would it take to dig myself out of that hole.

How did you prepare for the interview any advice?
    Jun 1, 2018 7
    • Amazon bananamaan
      OP
Grokking is not bad as a summary but it's not enough. Google had mostly nonstandard system design problems.

I prepared for around 2.5 months, pretty intensively, even took a week off work to prep for system design.
      Jun 1, 2018
    • Tesla LEETCODER
Thanks. The average difficulty of the questions were around leetcode hard?

When you say non standard it is not variants of problems on grokking?
      Jun 1, 2018
    • Amazon bananamaan
      OP
I did mostly mediums, some hard and easy. Google on-site was a mix of everything.

System design was mostly not on grokking. You need a solid foundation to pass them but it's possible to learn it through prep. Just read as much as you can. I would focus on system design primer and designing data intensive applications book. There's a pdf of it online

Thanks OP. I come from a distributed systems background, were the questions topic specific? I can imagine them asking about consistency levels, consensus, replication, consistent hashing and sharding. But did they go into further details like Paxos implementation and all?
      Jun 1, 2018
    • Amazon bananamaan
      OP
It was not on that level of detail for L5 (implement Paxos). Just design a specific system, general approach, compare solutions, benefits/drawbacks of each.

And it's L4. They got E5 from Facebook.

      OP
I have counteroffers in the 300k TC range and even my current Amazon TC is above 300k due to old grants and stock performing well.

I'm just not optimistic I can get a decent offer now from this bottom of the barrel starting point. Google knew my expected TC was 300k even for L4 and they came up with $265k TC L5. SMH

It’s a negotiating tactic. Tell them you’re going to walk and they’ll ask you exactly how much it will take to hire you, and then they’ll most likely give you exactly that (if it’s not too much)

What should be the numbers to go for here considering my existing offers and current comp in the $310-320k region? I really don't want to lose $50k/yr just to have Google on my resume.

320k sounds fair. To get there, you'll need to start by asking for 360k.
