Google L5 TPM vs. Amazon L6 TPM

Google offer: ~270 TC (170 base + 70 RSU/year + 15%) L5 TPM at Sunnyvale.
Amazon offer: ~260 TC L6 TPM at Seattle.

My preference is for Google as it aligns better with my experiences, aspirations and intellectual orientation.

Questions/comments regarding the Google offer:
1. Is 270K TC at L5 TPM a good offer for the Bay area?
I was expecting around 330 TC for Sunnyvale - so this feels on the lower side.

2. 280K RSU (over 4 years) seems underwhelming.
My expectation was over 400 (100K per year). Thoughts/opinions?

3. Should I opt for the Google Seattle location?
This won't be my first preference as I'd prefer to be at the headquarters' location for better interactions / exposure to other teams, but need to justify this (mostly to myself) in economic terms.

Note on the Amazon offer:
I don't have the complete break-up of the 260 TC yet, so at this point, it may not be an accurate comparison with the Google offer.
In general, I expect Google to be competitive vis-a-vis Amazon.

Any advice/suggestions?

Google has much better benefits than Amazon. Might wanna compare if you're looking to start a family.

In what sense? Better 401k match but that’s just a 3k-ish difference. Free food.

Salary sustainability. Amazon has salary band, e.g. for L6 SDE the band is 250 - 380k. Top 20% gets 380k, the other 80% gets 250k. You heard it right, 80% goes to the bottom of the band. When you are hired externally, they will bring you in to close to the top of band because they need you to raise the bar. But, once you are in, you need to be top 20% to sustain your compensation, otherwise you can see a huge cliff after year 4. Think twice before joining Amazon

You have the same cliff at Google. Your initial grant is higher than refreshes.

I didn’t notice anything especially better about G health insurance vs Amazon. gHIP was kinda lame. I guess the HSA was a little better but it wasn’t a big deal.

And that’s not how the salary bands work.

I read on glassdoor that in case you die prematurely, they continue to pay 50% of your pay to your spouse for the next 10 yrs. That in itself is a huge benefit in terms of financial security.

That is true, plus $1000/month per child until 18 years. You could also just buy life insurance...

State tax and COL make the Google offer significantly worse. The difference in benefits is not *that* great

Thanks. If Google Sunnyvale is not viable, I do have the option to consider Google Seattle, but I reckon I'll need to redo the team match. How is 270K in Sunnyvale in absolute terms (i.e. independent of the Seattle options)

Tax and COL got nothing in refreshers that stack up year over year. Google also gives 9k in 401k

No first year noogler refresh makes the refresh stack meh and that year 5 cliff brutal. Amazon stock grows faster and refreshers vest over 1 or 2 years after initial grant vs. 4 at Google. Amzn’s 401k match is less yes, but 3k vs 9k. The 6k/yr match diff is minuscule compared to the 13% state tax and 20-30% COL difference.

At Amazon you have to wait til your third year to get a refresher. Google refreshers vest monthly and stacks up on itself.

And the biggest difference? Stock growth doesn't work against you. Refreshers and comp increases are based solely on performance.

You’re not wrong. It’s a diff model for sure. G refreshes only vest monthly if the grant is over 160k. Quarterly otherwise. The stacking is pronounced years 2,3,4 but after that you have no initial grant and are relying on your stacked refresh - and refresh amounts rarely match sign-on/4.

Right, there's a 4 year cliff when the initial grant is done. With Amazon, your 3rd year refresher vests in year 5 and 6?

Anyway, taken all together I think you still come out ahead with Google, even with tax and COL factored in.

3rd and 4th year is 112k in RSU. It’s not evenly distributed as vesting is 5,5,40,40

Go for Google, but Seattle. 270k is nothing in the valley, everyone’s seemingly making 400k 🤷🏽‍♂️

The main topic on twitch blind is “feeling underpaid”. I’m doing fine but I wouldn’t say everyone is.

By “everyone” I was talking Sr. Level like a L6 of Amazon, obviously new grads and junior engineers would be lucky to get that.

Amazon usually offers ~250 for TPM L6. 310 is seen too but rarely. Expect a huge cliff after 4 yr as refreshers are in very low end.

congrats. How long did it take to get the Google offer? Is this in GCP? I am still waiting for mine to go to HC.
