Google L6 compensation

Aug 12, 2018 50 Comments

230K base, 20% bonus, 60K sign-on, 850K RSU.

230 + 46 (bonus) + 15k (avg sign on for 4 years) + 212.50 (RSU) = 503.5K TC

Good offer, any room to negotiate?

Ya, sounds good. I’d take it too. Google could be the tech giant that sheds 80% of its value over a few sour years. RSU is a fickle animal.

How was the interview process? Just leetcode or anything different?

      OP
Coding were all basically leetcode medium. 2 system design and one leadership interview (behavioral).
      Thanks!

What is level of sophistication is usually expected from System design and coding interviews? No bugs in first go? Also, did you have significant prior experience with stuff the team at G is working on? Asking coz trying to figure out how to prepare for the later two?

Oh and yes, congratulations on the offer, seems solid!!

      OP
I don't know what is the expectation, I can only speak about my experience. The interviewers are reasonable and more interested to see if you can solve something. I got few light hints to put me on the right track, but was able to finally solve the coding challenges at hand.

Design interviews were more conversational, talking about trade-offs, cost, number of machines/Data center capacity, bandwidth & latency. I am not a security expert so I touched in the topic but did not go deep there.

I don't have significant prior experience with anything. In fact my team match happened after the interview, so my domain was not a major factor in the decision AFAIK.

    OP
(copy/pasting my preparation tips since I got several DM's asking about it)

I can't say specific questions that were asked to me due to NDA agreement, but the tips below are generic.

It took me ~6+ months to prepare. I come from systems background, do didn't have to spend a lot of time on design interview preparations. For coding I took 6 months going from LC medium topic-by-topic (Arrays, List, Trees, Graphs, Recursion, DP, etc).
Surprisingly I did not get a DP problem during my interview at both G & F. However I've heard that they do ask them often. My questions were more on problem solving and application of algorithm than any tricks. Graph traversal were asked at both (LC medium), some string traversal Qs at G, array at F. All were medium difficulty LC. Got 2 per interview

Leadership is where I spent about 2-3 weeks to prepare, finding/remembering stories so I have good variety of situations to talk about for different situations.

6 months is a very long prepping time. Assuming that you prep just 1-2 hours a day in average (unless you were not working at the time ?)

How come at L6 they don’t give SysD questions? Do they have a specific role slated for you already so they’re altering the interview to fit your background? Thanks!

      OP
Interview experience at Google was impersonal and cookie-cutter: day full of coding (2), design (2), behavioral (1), past project (1) and lunch. Interviewers are from different parts of the company with diverse experiences. Most of my interviews are L7 or higher.

Uber was more personal since the interviews seem team specific. They tested on similar things as Facebook, so most of my preparation was common between them.

No I'm not from ML or other high demand area. Just a regular software engineer who loves design and code.
