If you have to transfer outside of US because of visa issue, how easy is it to transfer to Zurich given you have been at Google for less than a year?

It’s as easy as regular team transfer. Just find some teams and talk with their hiring managers. Zurich has probably the most amount of openings for SWE outside of U.S. The only problems with transferring within a year is that your current manager can block it, which should not happen since you are unable to legally stay within the current team anyway. Swiss visa however might be a case by case situation. All I can comment is that Switzerland government has announced to increase the work visa next year.

Thank you. I’ve seen people commenting about Swiss visa has a requirement of 1 year tenure at current company. Is that true?

Switzerland requires a minimum tenure of one year before you can do an internal transfer.

Is that a hard rule from Swiss side?

Yes. At least, it is Google's mobility team's interpretation of the rule and so they will decline your request for a transfer.

Remember that you’ll still owe US taxes if you’re a US citizen, so your take home pay will be significantly lower than your Swiss colleagues - and CoL is way higher in Zürich.

Actually no, in Zurich on Google's TC he'll owe about 20-25% local tax and this is about same as he'd owe to US feds so it'll roughly balance out. He won't be able to take advantage of tax resorts like Wollerau though.

CoL is comparable to Bay Area, housing is even cheaper here

That’s right and I need not owe anything for CA state taxes as there is a provision of “safe harbor” if a person lives 18 months abroad. But here I think OP is trying to move to Zurich for visa issues in US; so I guess OP is not a US citizen.
