Google Mountain View campus vs Sunnyvale

Is Google HQ in MTV campus/buildings/environment better than Sunnyvale/others? I did my interviews at Sunnyvale for the Google Cloud folks. Buildings were pretty nice with the typical perks. Cafeteria, assortment of food, lots of lounge areas, coffee, massage, game room, etc. commute is probably better for Sunnyvale local area as well. But I don’t know what I might be missing not seeing MTV.

There’s appeal for me working in HQ, I’m assuming it’s better due to being HQ? Anyone have any preference or suggestions on things that are better in MTV as opposed to Sunnyvale? Strictly speaking in terms of campus look-and-feel and perks, not the teams that each has.

  • At Microsoft and Apple “headquarters” is the best. But not at all companies. Google currently has nicer newer satellite offices compared to main campus.

How is svl considered a satellite office, it’s like five mins away

Depends what you considered hq, yes I do consider svl part of hq just like crit, pyth, etc

    • I don’t consider it part of main campus. It is it’s own campus with its own style and its own feeling.

The MTV offices are older buildings. They are very spread out as well. Sunnyvale is much newer and I personally greatly prefer it. The MP campus is just gorgeous.

    • Definitely not gorgeous. Way too much concrete and the buildings aren’t even exciting from the outside.

Nicer interiors, better layout, better parking, etc sure.

Sunnyvale is nicer yes but if you want to be where all the action is then Googleplex is the place to be

Yea that’s kind of exactly my point. What do the Sunnyvale folks miss out on compared to MTV group?

Sunnyvale inside is better outside is shitty - just a bunch of buildings that all kinda look the same. MTV more events, more cafes but older buildings and can be hard to get meeting rooms. With Sunnyvale you can avoid the horrible traffic especially during concert days.

For project opportunities, I would consider svl as part of hq due to geographical proximity.

Actually most of Sunnyvale. MP at least is newer. I was in MTV before going to SVL and I think it’s much nicer than MTV

Most new buildings in SVL are designed and purpose built for Google. MTV ones (except the one they are building right now) were bought from other companies. Unless you work at the one at Amphitheatre pkwy, you're no difference than working in SVL.

Will I work in Sunnyvale, absolutely yes.
Will I work for cloud? That's a different story.

Haha thanks. What teams do you think are good choices then for distributed backend systems? High impact, good wlb, blah blah blah. Are any of those in Sunnyvale offices?

Remember that even if you join a hq based team it could always be moved offsite a few weeks later
