FYI -- I already accepted and will be starting there soon.

L7 SWE (Senior Staff Software Engineer) in Mountain View, CA, USA. Theoretical Physics PhD & post-doc + ~28 years' software industry experience, primarily in distributed systems, previously a Principal Software Engineer at mid-size startup. Salary $258k/yr, target annual bonus 25%, $850k in Google RSUs vesting monthly over 4 years w. no cliff (~$212.5k/yr), $50k signing bonus vesting over 1 year. Nominal total compensation ~$535k/yr, ~$585k in first year.

This was a significant increase in stock and signing bonus from their first verbal offer. Google application & team fit process took ~6 months, but I was in no particular hurry.

      I thought so too until I got an L7 offer that was pretty close to OP's. I declined outright w/out negotiation.

      It was so far below my ask it was a bit insulting. I had another offer from FB and gave the Google recruiter a "I will say yes if you hit this" number. They came in at least $50k below that. Contrast that with FB, whose original offer was more than I asked for. When I negotiated with FB after getting Google's offer, I have FB a "buy it now number", which they beat by about 5%. I was happy with that offer, so I told Google thanks for the offer, but I respectfully decline.

    What kind of theoretical physics did you study? I also studied physics in undergrad, but couldn’t get into grad school :(. I liked elementary particles though.
