Google Recruiter Phone Call

got an email from a Google recruiter and have an initial phone call set up for Tuesday for Product Manager position. I am very anxious about it. I dont want to screw it up. I would like to know - 1. Does the recruiter decide whether the candidate gets further rounds or not? 2. What to expect in this phone call? 3. How to ensure to get next rounds of interviews? Any help is appreciated. Thank You!

Yes, recruiter may decide. Understanding what they are looking for is imp. Browse old threads for similar positions to get an idea.

Yes, the recruiter will determine, based on his/her assessment of your background, whether the hiring manager will be looped in next. Usually this call is super easy, however, as the recruiter usually doesn't have the depth of skill set to ask deep pertinent questions.

Remember, the recruiter is 100% on your side. Every time they call someone they are praying that person turn into a hire. given that, it is pretty hard to convince them that you’re not worth interviewing. Phone screen will be almost a given. In my experience, the bar for phone screen was pretty low. I didn’t think I did very well and yet I was brought in. But then I got crushed during the onsites. I wish I knew about the leetcode before interviewed. lol

Lol I can't imagine what I would do if I interviewed without knowing LC

It was years ago. Pre Blind, I think. Certainly before I’d ever heard of it. I did a bit of work on Cracking the Code Interview, but that doesn’t cut it. I LC’ed for MSFT and destroyed. Though they did have me on my heels a little with some more pracical hands-on problems...

You don’t really need to be nervous for this call. The recruiter is going to do the most basic filtering to make sure you are not an idiot. Here is what you need to do: 1) Make it clear that you are very interested. Genuine enthusiasm is a plus 2) Practice this question “so tell me about yourself” Google likes candidates who communicate well. They are looking for someone who can quickly and clearly articulate their story (30 seconds to 1 minute). Nail this and you will make it to the next round. 3) Be 100% honest with whatever information you give them. Don’t embellish your resume. Make sure your linkedin matches resume etc. You don’t have to volunteer anything negative if they don’t ask for it. If they do, jjust be honest. 4) Come up with a “why Google” answer. This needs to be clear and genuine. Practice it. 5) You need to buy more time. When My recruiter reached out She tried to get me to agree to a PM phone interview pretty quickly. Don’t agree to this. Tell them you are really busy at work and you need more time to properly prepare. They will be 100% ok with this. Google PM interviews are HARD. More importantly, they are specific, and you need at least two weekends to study how to answer their questions, in the way they want you to answer them. Buy time so that you can study. 6) Someone recommended www.tryexponent.com on blind. It was unbelievably helpful. I interviewed at FB last year and didn’t get an offer. After taking the course I got into Google and I have an on-site with FB coming up. Best $99 I ever spent. 7) At some point, likely after this round, they will ask you about compensation. Don’t give them a number first. Ask for a range instead. Good luck!

If the recruiter reached out to him, the “why google?” question is pretty easy to answer. “Because you called me.” lol

No, you definitely need to give a legit answer. They want to make sure you leave your current employer and are willing to stay at Google a couple of years.

My initial phone screen was a level 100 technical interview which caught me 100% off guard. I didn't prepare but thank gosh I passed it. Just be prepared.

Was it for a Product Manager role?

Microsoft Djduejejd Nov 18, 2019

No. Not quite but it wasn't for software engineer either

You don’t need to worry about any technical questions during the phone screen. You do need to prepare for the technical interview during the on site though.
