My friend just got this T3 offer from google as an automation engineer (not SDE), given that he has a PhD from a top 20 school and 2yr work experience from a FLAG company, this is seriously a low-ball offer. Recruiter said part of the reason is that his major is not directly in ME, therefore PhD degree does not count in this case. But seriously?! Any tips from Googler about further negotiating?
Stall. Ask for more time. Go interview elsewhere and mention that there is a pending offer from Google and they'll be faster.
Lol 105k.. Salesforce gives grad students 140-155k base, 100k rsu/4years, 10% bonus and 25-50k signing (can negotiate more, plus relocation is seperate ). We're not even top tier.
Masters or PhD ?
Masters or PhD. I am guessing PhD you could negotiate signing and base a bit more. Bachelor's you start one level higher at amts and get 125-30k, 85k rsu same bonus and sign on.
He is not a SWE
Still, T3 is beyond ridiculous
Wow what an insult! I would tell the recruiter that this offer is insulting and not even try to negotiate. Maybe they'll come back to him in the future with a better offer. Several years ago I rejected a Google offer after they refused to negotiate parts of it. A year later, a different recruiter called me back and said they'll give me everything that I was asking for.
Thank you, it’s indeed a very insulting offer. Recruiter said she’ll work on getting a T4 and better comps for him, but we doubt this will actually work out
Well if it doesn't he can just move on. Keeping your self respect is more important than having Google on your resume
Level is determined by interview performance. Negotiating is a way to get paid more than what Google thinks you are worth, given the benefit of the doubt (uncertainty in interview process) GSU is pretty high for T3 in this case. Bonus and stocks refresh are pretty good if you do well
So I guess there’s no room for arguing a level raise during negotiation?
Out of curiosity, what's flag? I assume it's autocorrect for fang, but not sure. Also, you said he doesn't have an ME. What's that? Overall, I'm surprised by the offer. I thought they'd do what they do for other ladders and have the offer be a T4 but the compensation be equivalent to T3 SWE since the higher level makes people feel better. I dunno, based on your description it's pretty surprising.
Yeah it’s one of those companies (fb, LinkedIn, amazon, google). He doesn’t have a degree in Mechanical Engineering and apparently that is desired for this position. Tbh this is the first time I heard google care about your major despite having an advanced degree when giving offer
What degree does he have then? I think it matter because If it's biology or anthropology I don't think it would help...
Google down level a lot. If you got competing offer then you will have a much better looking offer.
Is this in Seattle ?..if so, it doesn't sound too bad.

Without the details of the offer, can't comment on it
Just a regular T3 package, 105k base + 240GSU/4yr
105K? I won't even get out of bed for that.
