Google Tech Lead or IC option

I've been given the option to interview for Tech Lead or IC, and I am not sure what will be easier. I was told the interview process has changed recently and now everyone does one behavioral round, which is different from all my friends who got in last year. IC process will be 3 tech rounds, 1 design, 1 behavioral. The Tech Lead process will have a second behavioral round focused on leadership instead of one tech round. I was told Tech Lead is not a people managing role but it is a step toward that track. I am not sure what level, but I assume L4 since I only have 8 YOE and given 1 design round. I feel like less tech round means less chance of tripping up. Any suggestions?

Given the TL and design round, could be L5

Does that mean no system design round = interviewed for lower than L5?

I think you need 10 YOE to get in as L5. In the past my friends were told 2 design rounds were required to be considered for L5. Not a big deal really, since multiple of my friends got in at L4 with L5 salaries after Facebook counter. I did not apply. I've been in contact with a recruiter for two years now. 4 diffr

I don't think Tech Lead is part of any track. The recruiter said it's an official designation, so I think it's one under TLM
