From my understanding when you join google you get a desktop and a MacBook/Chromebook. Then you develop by remoting in to your desktop. Q1: do you have to develop remotely because of policy or can you set up your MacBook for local development? Q2: If you're developing remotely can you use your personal laptop to remote in from? Q3: Can you use the MacBook/Chromebook for personal use?
Most engineers prefer to work locally on the desktop. The laptop can also be used for email, video conferencing, code reviews, and development through a web based IDE, SSH, or remote desktop. For laptop choices, there is also a Linux laptop option.
Are the Desktops Linux based?
Yup
You don't have to develop remotely on your laptop, most normal people here develop on desktop. You can use laptop for personal stuff, it's not forbidden, but consider that it's fully backdoored and everything is potentially being logged, so don't be stupid
It depends on a project. “Google proper” - aka Google3 - is a Linux workstation + any company-provided laptop. But there’s a lot of open-source projects (Android, Chrome) where you are free to use whatever.
Personal stuff -> depends on how personal it is. Basically imagine there’s a stranger next to you who can see everything you’re doing. If you’re not comfortable doing something in front of the stranger, then don’t do it. Example: logging in to bank accounts, watching porn, developing personal projects Fine: watching cute kitten videos, browsing news, reading stackoverflow

Q1: you don’t set up your MB for local dev Q2: yes Q3: common sense is not to
Then sounds like buying your own laptop is the best way to go so you don't have to use two separate laptops, one for work and one for personal stuff
You can’t use a non Google issued laptop for work
