Google is getting sued for pressuring their recruiters to hire non-white and non-asian people. Is there any truth to this? Will Google lose this lawsuit? Settle? Thoughts?

    They don't need entry level software engineers. However, if they find a diverse candidate that's entry level they will make an exception and conduct an interview with them. They're still hiring white folks for other roles.

      What about Chinese? They were oppressed for quite long by the Chinese Exclusion Act. Asian Americans aren’t asking for any preferable treatment. What is needed is a fair system. We need equal opportunities, not equal handout. This whole diversity is BS. If you want it, work for it. If you want to climb social ladder and have better life than your parents, work harder. First generation of Asian immigrants worked so hard to have their next generation well educated to have a better future. Free hand outs won’t help in long run.

Maybe Jewish people, perhaps Native American, oh, Protestants had it rough for awhile, let’s also look at underrepresented people from Madagascar, Russians were oppressed, how about poor people from the Midwest states...or they have an easier life than POC growing up in Beverly Hills?

      @Cruise: I’ve never made a hire strictly based on diversity though. It was more of a note from HR to have at least considered a diverse range of backgrounds. It’s additional work, but who knows, these candidates might approach problems with a fresh perspective. Sometimes they could turn out better, and in those cases it’s not really a diversity hire. Just be yourself and always bring your A game to the interview.

    That’s bullshit. No matter what you do one group will always exaggerate and blame it on Google. Just stop ranting and may be admit you were rejected due your skills not being good enough.

    I’m a very frequent interviewer at Google and I always scan the packets of rejected candidates and in my experience I’ve never seen a candidate rejected unfairly.

    As a minority in tech, it's hurtful that I look around and 97% of my coworkers are Asian and White but I come on blind and people are complaining about diversity and making it seem like I don't deserve to be here when I did 400+ leetcode and aced my interviews like everyone else.

      OP when did I say they didn't? I said just like everyone else which actually implies they did. And what I'm trying to say is that this sentiment will only be negative for women and minorities when you are assuming they got here through a lower bar. As far as I know, Facebook and similar companies do not lower their bar for anyone. They just try their best to reach out to minorities because the talent pool is severely lacking in them. And I don't see how that is wrong. Can you count how many minority tech employees there are on your floor? Are they more than 5? Why is it wrong reaching out to more?

      Ok people need to read on the lawsuit. There's an email from a Google manager telling people to purge applications from Asian and white applicants. I have no clue if Google lowers the bar or not. I agree that we need to reach out to underrepresented groups, but the question is, is Google doing illegal hiring practices? (Again I don't know, just asking questions)

      “Affirmative action” is reverse discrimination, which means to put favor bias on weaker races, is legal. “Discrimination” which is to put favor bias on already stronger races is illegal. And yes, the whole damn thing is stupid.

    Different countries have oppressed different people. But all countries have oppressed a common species. That's women. Even women of oppressed communities were oppressed. Most women here fight for rights they deserve not something they want for nothing. Even if it means being a little unfair to men so what ? We've been unfair to them since forever. Why not balance the scales ? That's not just best for them. It's best for the society. We should grow as a community. Not everything is about having the best or being the best. It's about a community that's kind where everyone gets an opportunity.

      Let me see: worldwide 94% of workplace fatalities are men. Almost everywhere only men are drafted but even where women are they're not forced to do frontline service. Most civilized countries banned female infant genital mutilation but not male. Women live on average years longer than men. Male suicide is 3-4X that of women, one of the reasons: men are treated unfairly at family court and 85% of the time their children are taken away and they are reduced to a wallet. Women get 60% less time for the exact same crime as men. Boys are failing in school. Boys are medicated more by dangerous psychotropic drugs for behavior problems. In the US women outnumber men in enrollment and graduation from colleges. Single, childless college educated women outearn single, childless college educated men. We spend much more on breast cancer research vs prostate cancer research despite claiming similar number of lives. Most truly homeless (living on the street, not in a shelter) are men. And the list just goes on and on and on. Men are systematically discriminated against. I don't have enough data on other cultures but western women are the most pirvileged of any group I'm aware of.

      This is an insane point of view. Your argument is essentially for some form of deliberate discrimination based on a subjective assessment of who has been oppressed in the past? Furthermore, it is best for society if we don’t choose people that have the skillset for a job but rather, we should allow everyone to have an opportunity to fill whatever role they please?

      There is a difference between prioritizing underrepresented groups (legal affirmative action) and banning white guys (illegal discrimination). The suit is alledging that in at least one recruiting group the latter is what occured.

    This is complete and utterly bullshit.
    More than 90% of all SWE candidates I intervieweed in the last six months were male, most of them Asian, and I never saw anyone rejected by anything other than technical abilities.

    I believe that too many people think too much of themselves and can't admit that they weren't good enough. They need to find a way to blame someone or something else for their failures.

      Also if you look at the people who apply, there are not many from south East Asian countries. It is not like company trying not to hire them.

      I have a Filipina friend who's at Google and another Viet friend who's joining soon. My last job (crappy startup) had a Thai girl. Someone else I know is a Malaysian at LinkedIn. (All software engineers)
      So they're there. Just hard to find and in small numbers.

The day before the appointment, he said he had to reschedule. Two days later I got a standard rejection email from him: after careful review, we decided not to move forward blah blah. Yeah, I am an Asian
