Google on-site mixed feedback. What are the chances to clear HC?

Had 5 rounds interview loop with Google. 2 of them were very decent. The other 3 were not bad. Basically wrote an optimal code in all 5 interviews (that is why I'm hoping to get through). Took a little more time to arrive at a good solution in the other 3 interviews (that is why I'm nervous).

Spoke with my recruiter and she said that the feedback is mixed. But it will still move on to the HC. She said that I fall into the majority of cases as strong feedback in all interviews is very rare and therefore I shouldn't give up hope.

Now I know Google is very picky, so do I still have a chance? My performance will be rated against everyone who interviewed and I'm afraid others must have done better than I did.

Interviewed for L3.

They wouldn’t be taking you to HC if they didn’t think you have a strong shot

Can I ask does Google really expect stellar performance in all 5 rounds? I mean I understand that Google has the luxury to be picky bcoz everyone wants to work for them but it really puts immense pressure on candidates

The majority of hired candidates have at least one interview that isn’t stellar. Many have an interview that’s a disaster.

I didn't have a single disaster interview. But I guess I didn't exactly "ace" all of them either. I guess mediocre balanced scores won't cut it for me. Should probably have had excellent scores in at least 4. Too bad!

If it helps, mine would have been 1 bombed (I know a no hire coz the recruiter told me), 1 or maybe 2 aced and rest average.

Mixed could mean any combination except anything with 2 or more no hires. HC can still reject for reasons you'll never know. But good news is the bar has lowered and passing HC has a higher success rate than before (*not a reflection on your capabilities, but in general*).

Your current tc sucks, i hope you get the job at google and get a good tc. To answer you question, it depends on the panel and your luck !!

OP- I had 2 awesome, 2 good and 1 bad and made it pass HC. So dont worry, I think you have good chances. I read somewhere that better to get 1 or 2 strong hires than all 5 avg.
As some one suggested, make sure to ask recruiter if you can do team match before HC to get statement of support. It adds weight to your packet. That's what my recruiter suggested me to do and it worked out.
Update us here with the result. All the best!

Whats the difference between awesome and good rounds? No hints vs minor hints?
      Jan 30
    • Intel abds
Awesome is no hints, fast coding with min errors.
Good means 1 or 2 hints and was able to finish coding just on time.

I see, and I assume mostly mediums with maybe a hard thrown in as followup?

      Thanks for the info.

This is so on point, love it! After getting rejected for SWE, Google did reach out to me for a role known as “Technical Solutions Consultant” a couple weeks later

How did you perform on the actual interviews? Solved 2 questions with no hints, only 1.3x etc?
      Jan 30
    • Google ehEL54
I solved all questions except one which I needed a hint to get to the optimal solution. I also do remember one question had quite a bit of gotchas which I quickly fixed when the interviewer pointed it out. Probably got lucky.

can you think of any problems on LC that are similar in difficulty to the ones you got? wanna see if i can solve them in 40 mins

Unfortunately, there's no guarantee. I had similar feedback and my packet was even sent to hiring managers for team matching, all of whom were interested in having me on their team (at least that's what the recruiter said). Ultimately, didn't manage to pass HC. That said, I wish you the best of luck!

Thats bad, so disheartening..if the HM is interested, HC should not oppose. What If all those HM were in the HC. If a number of ppl are saying yes, there must be some reason.
      Jan 29
    • Ebates uDwR05
Yup :( My recruiter even included the hiring manager's recommendation letter in the packet submitted to HC. But anyway I got offers from FAA and Microsoft. Will try G again next year :)

    • Google RockLobsta
A large part of the reason for a HC is because HM can’t be trusted to make the decision. They are incentivized to hire someone quickly vs waiting for the right candidate. Good short term, bad long term.

Did any of your rounds go really well? A stellar round can offset a mixed round. How well did your 'decent' rounds go?

Wish you good luck OP :)

You might have a shot! It takes a maximum of one one week before getting results from HC. All the best and keep us posted :)

In that case Usually they’ll do team matching first to get HM support. And get ready to be matched with less sexy sounding teams + lowballed + downleveled hard

Any system design? Currently a 61 so my guess is that they’ll downlevel me to L3, which I’ve decided I’m OK with.

I'm in the same situation with mixed feedback and supposed to hear about HC results tomorrow. Lately I've been wishing that I could save my current checkpoint like in video games and just keep reloading that save file until I get lucky and HC says yes. But hopefully we both get lucky!

I think they always say feedback is mixed. It sets the stage for a down level if HC want it

It’s true though for most candidates. It’s uncommon that a candidate crushes all of the interviews.
