Google promo salary Increase vs joining at higher level

Haven't gotten promoted at Google yet (hopefully), but was curious to understand if the TC bump from leveling from 4 to 5 similar to actually joining as a 5. As an example when I got promoted in Amazon, I was very dissapointed because they gave me a 15% on base which really wasn't much bc I opted for more RSU when I joined.

The reason I'm asking is, is it worth it to look for IC5 at other companies at this point? Or just stick with Google if I like the company?

Get an offer from Apple, Fb or Netflix for E5, then go back to G after a year.
Internal promotions are always less than external hires.

Wow is that really the case? So my perf rating sticks with me forever? What if I hob to somewhere like FB as an IC5 and make it to an IC6 and want to bounce back? I'm asking because my gf works at FB and it seems like people get promoted more quicker than Google.

Google has the most restrictive leveling by design. And in general they'll always try to downlevel you when you apply to try to keep it that way.

The upside to this is that Google levels are typically the most respected in the industry.

And yes, when you reapply to Google, they'll look at your previous trajectory and perf ratings, and then adjust downward a bit for you to ramp back up. It is possible they'll respect your FB promo, some people are able to get upleveled, but more often it seems to be downleveled.

Yeah agreed with your statement. Seen it happen tons of time. I guess in this case my hope is to hope and get a +1 and somehow make another +1 within 2 yrs due to more relaxed promotions. But I guess at that point if I have a much higher TC why even come back to Google.

Hopping around works well for TC but not as well for levels IMO.

If I were you I'd get this promo at G then shop for TC if you want.

Thanks for you advice I agree with you. I guess it really depends if I want higher TC or levels. Google is super stable and I don't see it losing to it's other players anytime soon.

  • Internal promo at G is way less than external hires with competing offers. Cuz you are considered ME in the next level

They allegedly correct the discrepancy within 2-4yrs unless u really do a terrible job.

    • Yes thatโ€™s true. But 2-4 years is a long time bro... Also that usually means another promotion which will most likely land you in the low band of next level... And that's yet another 2-4 years to catch up...
